Energetic 1,2,3,4-Tetrazines

1,2,3,4-Tetrazine is considered as a promising scaffold for the construction of new high-energy materials, which possess high and, in some cases, record detonation performance. In this chapter, recent state-of-the-art methods for the synthesis of tetrazines, their 1,3-dioxides, benzo- and hetero-annulated derivatives, as well as their reactivity are summarized. Some physicochemical properties along with their spectral and crystallographic data are considered. Particular attention is paid to the thermal stability of these compounds and plausible thermal decomposition mechanisms since they are crucial parameters for practical applications. The energetic performance of the most promising tetrazine-based materials is also assessed.
