‘LE JARDIN ANGLAIS’
This article includes a translation of the little-known “Memorandum” on
the Cultivation of Land and Landscaping of Kamennyi Ostrov” (1769) from the
French, held in the collections of the College of Foreign Affairs in AVPRI. The
author of the Memorandum was the British Ambassador to the court of Catherine II,
Charles Cathcart. Cathcart chose to share his thoughts about the particularities of
the “English park” with Catherine the Great via Count N. I. Panin as a token of his
gratitude at being invited to spend the summer in the tsarevich Pavel Petrovich’s
residence on Kamennyi Ostrov. Members of Cathcart’s family left numerous
accounts of their arrival and stay on Kamennyi Ostrov from 1769 to 1771. These
accounts, held in the collections of The National Archives of the United Kingdom
and the National Library of Scotland allow us to speak about the role of the Cathcarts in popularizing English-style gardens among the Petersburg aristocracy and in their perception of the “heavenly” Kamennyi ostrov in the Neva delta.
