How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

The Peculiar Measure Identifying of the Temperature Leap in the Distributed Raman Sensors

P. 1–4.
Ershov I., Oleg V. Stukach, Aimagambetova R.

Technologies for observation of the dangerous production facilities are an important direction. Many practical monitoring problems are solved by using fiber-optic temperature sensors. These sensors are superior to electronic sensors in many aspects – weight, dimensions, and the effect of electromagnetic hindrances. But the most important advantage is the ability to use a single sensor element (fiber) to carry out measurements over several kilometers, which is fundamentally impossible by the electronic measuring instruments. However, fiber-optic measurements are inherently related to the processing of signals with a high level of noise that occurs during optoelectronic conversion. Because of observation systems usually indicated the changes in the measured value, it is necessary to develop methods for identifying small shifts in the signal with the extremely small signal-to-noise ratio. The paper presents a technique for signal processing that characterizes the Stokes and Anti-Stokes components when the fiber is heated in several areas. The technique is based on an algebraic rising in the divergence of the values of the Stokes and Anti-Stokes components with increasing temperature.  It was possible to identify the leap of the signal level reliably despite of the increasing the noise spectral density, and it was confirmed by physical modeling.

Sokolov B., Frontiers in Political Science 2021 Vol. 3 Article 642283
This article offers a gentle introduction to the measurement invariance (MI) literature with a focus on its relevance to  comparative political research. It reviews 1) the conceptual foundations of MI; 2) standard procedures of testing for MI in practical applications within the multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) paradigm; and 3) two novel approaches to MI, Bayesian approximate measurement invariance, ...

Revisiting the Middleton Alienation Scale: In Search of a Cross-Culturally Valid Instrument
Lytkina E., Survey Research Methods 2020 Vol. 14 No. 4 P. 365–397
The article contributes to the issue how to deal with measurement non-variance. I address a well-established scale by Middleton (1963) which was created to measure alienation. However, unlike commonly treated in literature, there is evidence that the scale is two-dimensional, and consists of the measures of anomie and alienation. I use the data from two ...

Анализ факторов моделей для оценки эксплуатационной интенсивности отказов ламп бегущей волны
Korolev P., Polesskiy S., Серебрякова Ю. О. et al., Авиакосмическое приборостроение 2020 № 6 С. 40–49
Traveling wave tubes (TWT) are widely used in power amplifiers for radio means of information transmission, including in space equipment. This is due to the fact that for them there are high requirements to ensure dependability, for example, due to the lack of possibility of maintenance for a long period of active existence. Hence the ...
