Social Integration: At the Crossroads of Knowledge and Values
The International Laboratory for Social Integration Research (ILSIR) at HSE University studies the challenges faced by vulnerable groups and explores ways to help them participate fully in everyday life. To develop effective solutions, the laboratory’s researchers combine cutting-edge methods with practical fieldwork. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Laboratory Head Elena Iarskaia-Smirnova discusses the laboratory’s work.

Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

The emergence of hierarchical alignment in Northern Khanty: a comparative dialectal corpus study
Muraviev N., Linguistica Uralica 2025 Vol. 61 No. 2 P. 106–130
This study investigates the morphosyntactic coding of core arguments in Northern Khanty, with a focus on the use of active/passive voice and subjective/objective conjugation. The goal is to offer a more detailed understanding of the coding patterns across dialects. To achieve this, I analyze corpus data from four Northern Khanty dialects: Obdorsk, Shuryshkary, Tegi, and Kazym Khanty, using ...

EEG Face Oddball Paradigm as the Test for Emotional Reaction
Popyvanova A., Pomelova E., Bredikhin D. et al., Sixth International Conference Neurotechnologies and Neurointerfaces (CNN), Kaliningrad, Russian Federation, IEEE Xplore 2024 P. 34–37
One method for assessing human emotional reactions is considered paradigms involving the presentation of affective images, including facial expressions, which are among the most familiar and noticeable stimuli in our visual environment. Electroencephalography event-related potentials (ERP) to various stimuli are used as sensitive tests for determining categorical perception of specific stimulus modalities. The oddball ERP ...

Шевченко А. О., Вартанов А. В., Современная наука: актуальные проблемы теории и практики. Серия «Познание» 2023 № 1 С. 108–111
This study is aimed at identifying the time intervals of dynamic speech for the subsequent analysis of the evoked EEG potentials. Understanding of exact time intervals will allow to make better use of pattern classification possibilities for BCI (brain-computer interface). The study involved 7 subjects with the following stimuli: 7 phonemes (A - [a], B ...

Шевченко А. О., Вартанов А. В., Российский психологический журнал 2022 Т. 19 № 4 С. 186–210
Introduction. The existing speech production schemes do not fully reflect the interaction of speech perception systems and one’s own internal speech. The study is aimed at comparing the connection between internal pronunciation and phonemic perception using psychophysi-ological methods. Methods. Twenty-five people took part in the EEG study. The subjects were offered auditory stimuli, and then ...

Background. The article discusses various approaches to describing the processes of sound pronunciation. Works in the field of neuroscience and speech therapy provide comprehensive descriptions of sound pronunciation. However, they are rarely combined in a multidisciplinary approach to address issues of sound production and correction. Objective. The article seeks to describe interdisciplinary approaches to the problem ...

Психофизиологические корреляты особенностей рефлексии при разной степени тревожности
Сизикова Т. Э., Леонов С. В., Polikanova I., Сибирский психологический журнал 2025 № 95 С. 78–95
Addressing the psychophysiological correlates of reflection in the context of modern psychology based on the integrity paradigm is an urgent and promising area. We rely on the ideas of L.S. Vygotsky and the critical ontology of N. Hartmann, which allow us to analyze reflection using modal analysis and take into account the relationship between mental ...

The ventive and the deictic shift: The case of Old Assyrian
Sergey Koval, Loesov S., Studies in Language 2025 Vol. 49 No. 1 P. 93–118
The Old Assyrian language is a branch of East Semitic. East Semitic has been extinct since around 400 BCE. The Old Assyrian texts were produced by Assyrian merchants between 1890 and 1860 BCE in Northern Mesopotamia and Central Anatolia. Old Assyrian, as well as most other East Semitic varieties, had a ventive (or cislocative) marker ...

Syllable-Initial Phonemes Affect Neural Entrainment to Consonant-Vowel Syllables
Kazanina N., Houghton C., Cucu M. O., Frontiers in Neuroscience 2022 No. 16 P. 1–11
Neural entrainment to speech appears to rely on syllabic features, especially those pertaining to the acoustic envelope of the stimuli. It has been proposed that the neural tracking of speech depends on the phoneme features. In the present electroencephalography experiment, we examined data from 25 participants to investigate neural entrainment to near-isochronous stimuli comprising syllables ...

Bribri media tantum verbs and the rise of labile syntax
Pacchiarotti S., Kulikov L., Linguistics 2022 Vol. 60 No. 2 P. 617–657
In this article, we first show that the Bribri (Chibchan) middle voice suffix -r derives passive voice from active transitive and agentive intransitive verbs, as well as anticausative verbs from nominal and adjectival roots. Second, we focus on five media tantum verbs, i.e., forms that synchronically carry the -r suffix and have no counterpart without -r. Unlike ...
