История английского языка: учебник
The textbook describes the causal development of the English language from the Old English (6–11th centuries) period to the Early Modern English (16–17th centuries) period. It focuses not only on the inherent but also on the intersystemic (phonomorphological, lexico-grammatical) factors of linguistic changes and, in particular, on their functional connection with the “mode of existence” of the language, that is, a hierarchical relationship of its dialectal and normalized forms, taken diachronically.
Some important aspects of this mode of existence (such as changes in the writing system, the scale of external influence on the English language, the status of Scottish English, or Scots, in various epochs) are covered in more detail in the Appendix, which contains essays written by M. A. Volkonskaya.
This textbook grew from lectures given by the author at the Faculty of Philology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, for many years. It is intended for undergraduates studying the history of the English language according to their university curriculum as well as at M. A. and Ph. D. students.
