Linear logic in normed cones: probabilistic coherence spaces and beyond

Mathematical Structures in Computer Science. 2021. Vol. 31. No. 5. P. 495–534.
Sergey Slavnov

Ehrhard et al. (2018. Proceedings of the ACM on Programming Languages, POPL 2, Article 59.) proposed a model of probabilistic functional programming in a category of normed positive cones and stable measurable cone maps, which can be seen as a coordinate-free generalization of probabilistic coherence spaces (PCSs). However, unlike the case of PCSs, it remained unclear if the model could be refined to a model of classical linear logic. In this work, we consider a somewhat similar category which gives indeed a coordinate-free model of full propositional linear logic with nondegenerate interpretation of additives and sound interpretation of exponentials. Objects are dual pairs of normed cones satisfying certain specific completeness properties, such as existence of norm-bounded monotone weak limits, and morphisms are bounded (adjointable) positive maps. Norms allow us a distinct interpretation of dual additive connectives as product and coproduct. Exponential connectives are modeled using real analytic functions and distributions that have representations as power series with positive coefficients. Unlike the familiar case of PCSs, there is no reference or need for a preferred basis; in this sense the model is invariant. PCSs form a full subcategory, whose objects, seen as posets, are lattices. Thus, we get a model fitting in the tradition of interpreting linear logic in a linear algebraic setting, which arguably is free from the drawbacks of its predecessors.

Linear dependencies, polynomial factors in the Duke–Erdős forbidden sunflower problem
Kupavskii A., Noskov F., Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 2026 Vol. 14 Article 124
We call a family of $s$ sets $\{F_1, \ldots, F_s\}$ a sunflower with $s$ petals if, for any distinct $i, j \in [s]$, one has $F_i \cap F_j = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$. The set $C = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$ is called the {\it core} of the sunflower. It is a classical result of ...

Effects of Elevation Changes and Multilevel Structures on Vehicular Signal Propagation
Stepanyants V., Andrey V. Fizulin, Chibirov A. et al., FUTURE TRANSPORTATION 2026 Vol. 6 No. 5 Article 225
Reliable Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) evaluation requires propagation models that represent terrain and multilevel infrastructure. Most integrated vehicular simulators still rely on planar models, but the magnitude of the resulting bias is unclear. This study quantitatively compares flattened two-dimensional (2D) and terrain-aware three-dimensional (3D) variants of three scenarios using identical Sionna RT settings. The pipeline combines OpenStreetMap ...

Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 2 Article 119245
This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

Automated Ranking of Soybean Plots from Close-Range RGB Video via Depth Filtering and Point-Based Counting
Groshev Maksim, Rybakov Petr, Teterin N. et al., Sensors 2026 Article 6171
Manual assessment of soybean yield components, such as pod number, is laborious, time-consuming, and subjective. Existing computer-vision approaches based on object detection or instance segmentation perform poorly on close-range RGB imagery of soybean canopies due to severe occlusions, ambiguous plant boundaries, and the high cost of bounding-box annotation. To address these challenges, we propose a ...

To spike or not to spike: the whims of the Wonham filter in the strong noise regime
Bernardin C., Chhaibi R., Najnudel J. et al., Probability Theory and Related Fields 2026 Vol. 195 P. 1823–1875
We study the celebrated Shiryaev-Wonham filter (Wonham, W.M., in J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 347–369, 1964) in its historical setup, where the hidden Markov jump process has two states. We are interested in the weak noise regime for the observation equation. Interestingly, this becomes a strong noise regime for the filtering equations. Earlier results of ...

In this paper, we present explicit formulas for the inverse and determinant in geometric (Clifford) algebras over vector spaces of dimension n = 7. The derivation of these formulas is made possible by generalizing the concept of conjugation to basis conjugation operations. We further develop a general method for constructing such formulas over odd-dimensional spaces ...

Making first order linear logic a generating grammar
Sergey Slavnov, Logical Methods in Computer Science 2023 Vol. 19 No. 4
It is known that different categorial grammars have surface representation in a fragment of first order multiplicative linear logic (MLL1). We show that the fragment of interest is equivalent to the recently introduced extended tensor type calculus (ETTC). ETTC is a calculus of specific typed terms, which represent tuples of strings, more precisely bipartite graphs ...

Language models for some extensions of the Lambek calculus
Kanovich M., Kuznetsov S., Scedrov A., Information and Computation 2022 Vol. 287 Article 104760
We investigate language interpretations of two extensions of the Lambek calculus: with additive conjunction and disjunction and with additive conjunction and the unit constant. For extensions with additive connectives, we show that conjunction and disjunction behave differently. Adding both of them leads to incompleteness due to the distributivity law. We show that with conjunction only ...

On embedding Lambek calculus into commutative categorial grammars
Slavnov S. A., Journal of Logic and Computation 2022 Vol. 32 No. 3 P. 479–517
We consider tensor grammars, which are an example of ‘commutative’ grammars, based on the classical (rather than intuitionistic) linear logic. They can be seen as a surface representation of abstract categorial grammars (ACG) in the sense that derivations of ACG translate to derivations of tensor grammars and this translation is isomorphic on the level of string ...

Cobordisms and Commutative Categorial Grammars
Sergey Slavnov, Journal of Cognitive Science 2021 Vol. 22 No. 2 P. 68–91
We propose a concrete surface representation of abstract categorial grammars in the category of word cobordisms or cowordisms for short, which are certain bipartite graphs decorated withwords in a given alphabet, generalizing linear logic proof-nets. We also introduce and study linear logic grammars, directly based on cobordisms and using classical multiplicative linear logic as a typing system. ...

Reconciling Lambek's restriction, cut-elimination, and substitution in the presence of exponential modalities
Kanovich M., Kuznetsov S., Scedrov A., Journal of Logic and Computation 2020 Vol. 30 No. 1 P. 239–256
The Lambek calculus can be considered as a version of non-commutative intuitionistic linear logic. One of the interesting features of the Lambek calculus is the so-called ‘Lambek’s restriction’, i.e. the antecedent of any provable sequent should be non-empty. In this paper, we discuss ways of extending the Lambek calculus with the linear logic exponential modality ...

Pomset logic introduced by Retoré is an extension of linear logic with a self-dual noncommutative connective. The logic is defined by means of proof-nets, rather than a sequent calculus. Later a deep inference system BV was developed with an eye to capturing Pomset logic, but equivalence of system has not been proven up to now. ...

On Banach spaces of sequences and free linear logic exponential modality
Sergey Slavnov, Mathematical Structures in Computer Science 2019 Vol. 29 No. 2 P. 215–242
We introduce a category of vector spaces modelling full propositional linear logic, similar to probabilistic coherence spaces and to Koethe sequences spaces. Its objects are rigged sequence spaces, Banach spaces of sequences, with norms defined from pairing with finite sequences, and morphisms are bounded linear maps, continuous in a suitable topology. The main interest of the ...

Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 56 (1–3) 239–311, LMSS have established an extremely surprising result that propositional linear logic is undecidable. Their proof is very complex and involves numerous nested inductions of different kinds. Later an alternative ...
