‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Государственно-частное партнерство в уголовно-исполнительной системе России

С. 58–65.
Дятлова Н. А.

An article considers issues concerning possibility of involving penitentiary institutions in public-private partnership projects. On the basis of the analysis of legislation on public-private partnership and those rules regulating penitentiary system of the Russian Federation, a summary on valuable practicability for creation of private correctional institution  for resolving some issues in criminal-execution system of Russia in modern trends.

The purpose of the research is legal analysis and suggestion how to resolve theoretical and practical difficulties when non-governmental (private) correctional institutions are set-up in Russian penitentiary system. The article is considering matters of development of the private penitentiary system abroad, differentiation of public-private partnership from “privatisation” of correctional institutions, possible sources of profit from private correctional institutions, formulation of key specifics which require special emphasis for structuring conditions of agreement on public-private partnership, elaboration on this basis recommendations for improvement of legislation of the Russian Federation in the area of nvestigation.

There is a special emphasis in this research that at the moment there is a great demand for attracting investments in Russian penitentiary system in renovation and repair of their buildings, as well as in construction of the new correctional institutions. For bringing a system of execution punishment in compliance with norms of international standards an additional financing of the system of execution punishment is required. However, at the moment the state has no sufficient financing for its penitentiary system. At that work of convicted persons, even non-qualified one, can be profitable, in accordance with foreign experience. Use of model of public-private partnership in the system of execution punishment would help to resolve some problems, including decrease of unemployment level.
