Again on nomina agentis in Tocharian B: some new observations
Tocharian and Indo-European studies. 2020. Vol. 20. P. 83-106.
Itkin I., Курицына А. В.
The Tocharian nt-participles ("active" present participles, PPA) are often considered to be in fact agent nouns; but in Tocharian B, where several types of agent nouns exist, the interaction of both formations has mostly remained unexplored. In this paper, we evaluate the morphological features and usage of the nt-participles and agent nouns in Tocharian B and argue that agent nouns in -auca are complementarily distributed with nt-participles depending on the present class of the underlying verb and thus should be treated as participles (PPA II) as well.

It is generally assumed that the syntactic structure of participial relative clauses is impoverished, “reduced” in comparison to that of regular RCs (see a. o. Burzio 1981; Chomsky 1981; Hazout 2001; Siloni 1995; Stowell 1981). Participial RCs are often analysed as VP-like structures (for some, embedded under a nominalizing node, Doron & Reintges 2005; Hazout ...

In this paper, the Tocharian B fragment 498 is identified as a parallel manuscript of the medical text PK AS 3A. We propose restorations and interpretations of some just partially preserved lexemes, i. a. of the hapax śalma in line b7, and discuss the observable orthographic and content-related differences between both copies. This analysis leads ...

The article is a detailed review of the monograph by the famous Indo-Europeanist R. Kim on the dual of nouns in the Tocharian languages. Along with a number of quite convincing theses, R. Kim's book also contains controversial propositions. Thus, the author's statement about the almost complete disappearance of the dual number in Tocharian A seems to be ...

L-form used without auxiliary in the non-perfect meaning is traditionally regarded as a former
form of the perfect tense, which had changed into the only past tense form in the live speech. However,
the analysis of Russian chronicles has shown that contexts with such use of l-forms can be divided
in several types. This article discusses one of ...

There are two common relativization strategies in the Russian language: relativization with a relative pronoun kotoryj (roughly translatable to English that) and relativization with a participle. Even though these two constructions do not show signifi cant diff erence in meaning, they are not fully interchangeable. The Russian language has several documented contexts (also known as ...

The paper discusses the form of the reflexive suffix in Russian participles. The original Old
Russian participles had been lost or lexicalized in Russian, and the class of participles was later re-borrowed
from Church Slavonic, where they uniformly use -sja as a reflexive suffix, whereas other verbal forms have
-sja after consonants and -s’ after vowels. Participles ending ...

Much difficulty in the analysis of Latin constructions with dominant participles is caused by a typologically unusual pattern of subject agreement: instead of being assigned case according to their subject function (like, e.g., the accusative subjects of infinitives), subjects of participles appear in the same case as the participle itself. This study presents evidence against ...

The article discusses the etymology of the Greek theonym Κρόνος (Cronus), qualified by all dictionaries as etymologically unclear. Когда «Князь Серебряный» увидел свет (1862), тогдашние ревнители общественного блага сочли «повесть времен Иоанна Грозного» литературно архаичной, этически ничтожной и политически вредной. Честному писателю надлежит клеймить сегодняшние безобразия, а не баснословного царя. Стыдно отвлекать общество от важных дел сказками о княжеских страданиях, порушенной любви, верности слову, муках совести и прочей ерунде. Граф А. К. Толстой ...
