Waste Management in Russia: Technological Advances
A waste management system (WMS) in Russia has a great potential for technological improvement. Recently the Russian Government has initiated its radical transformation within the framework of the National Project “Ecology” and now plans to increase the share of the disposed and treated municipal solid waste (MSW) up to 36% and 60% relatively by 2024. A large number of the illegal landfills is going to be eliminated and recultivated by this year. Still, the results of the previous studies on the Russian WMS demonstrate a rather narrow focus on its legal mechanisms and organizational approaches to it. This chapter, therefore, is aimed at the investigation of the technological innovations that could be introduced into the Russian WMS in future in order to increase its economic effectiveness and make the country cleaner. The methodology of this study is based on the semantic analysis conducted by means of the intellectual big data analysis which currently is being considered as one of the most promising techniques for the detection of the innovative technologies. The semantic analysis is accompanied by a multiple case study of the recent technological developments of the Russian scientists in the field of waste management. The results of this research, thus, are represented by the global trends in this field as well as Russian practical examples. The managerial concepts, practices and tools as well as legislative initiatives that can stimulate the integration of the innovative technologies into the Russian WMS are also discussed in this chapter.
