Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Zheltukhin V. S., Kiselev G. B., A. Yu. Shemakhin et al., High Energy Chemistry 2025 Vol. 59 No. 2 P. 207–214
A non-invasive voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) method for electron density measurement in the surface layer of mercury plasma glow discharge is studied. The method is based on determination of resonant frequencies between the plasma layer and the radio frequency signal by the unit standing wave ratio (SWR) combined with the calculation of the dielectric permittivity and ...

Schmitz A., Hanstein L., Klein M. et al., Microgravity Science and Technology 2025 Vol. 37 Article 7
In this work we present an experiment in which we injected microspheres at low pressure into a capacitively coupled argon plasma chamber. The setup was located in the top point of the Einstein-Elevator drop tower in Hannover, Germany, where the microparticles reached their equilibrium position above the lower electrode during 1 g. During the fall, ...

Bondarenko G., Fisher M. R., Kristya V. I., Journal of Surface Investigation: X-Ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques 2025 Vol. 19 No. 1 P. 66–72
A model of a cathode layer in a gas glow discharge is formulated taking into account the presence of a dielectric film with varying thickness on the cathode across different areas of its surface, and in some areas, the film may be absent. The model includes ion–electron emission from the cathode surface, thermalfield electron emission from the cathode ...

Li L., Li Z., Meng J. et al., Chemical Communications 2025 Vol. 61 No. 45 P. 8252–8255
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to the abundance and cost-effectiveness of sodium resources. However, their widespread application is hindered by challenges such as sluggish ion diffusion kinetics and structural instability of cathode materials during prolonged cycling. The design of advanced cathode architectures with enhanced ion transport and ...

We propose a model for a low-current gas discharge in a mixture of argon and mercury vapor in the presence of a thin dielectric film on the surface of a cathode. The model takes into account that in such a mixture, a significant contribution to ionization of the working gas can be made by the ionization of ...

Dobrovol’skii Y. O., Lyskov N., Mazo G. N., Russian Journal of Electrochemistry 2023 Vol. 59 No. 12 P. 1080–1091
The studies of how the method of organization of the microstructure of Pr2CuO4-based (РСО) cathodes affects the electrochemical characteristics of model electrolyte-supported solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are carried out. It is shown that the higher thickness of the PCO cathode layer and the introduction of a pore-forming agent increase the specific power of tested SOFCs ...

G. G. Bondarenko, Kristya V. I., Fisher M. R., Journal of Surface Investigation: X-Ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques 2023 Vol. 17 No. 1 P. 84–89
A model of glow gas discharge in the presence of a thin insulating film on the cathode is formulated. It takes into account that under discharge current flow, due to the bombardment of the cathode by ions, positive charges accumulate on the film and generate strong electric field in it. As a result, field emission of electrons from ...
