Современные тенденции в употреблении коннектора "то есть"
This paper deals with modern use of the Russian connector to jest’ in the sentence initial position. Based on the Russian National Corpus data, we investigate the diachronic development of the meanings and uses of to jest’ and consider syntactic conditions of the sentence initial occurances. It is shown that to jest’, can introduce an independent sentence (taking the first position in it) mainly in those contexts where the first component of the construction is a sentence or a text fragment (paragraph). In addition, it was found that an increase in the frequency of the connector at the beginning of a sentence is associated with the imitation of oral discourse in written speech, the introduction and development of dialogs, followed by the development of new meanings and functions of the connector.
