The study focuses on the origin of the famous medieval forgery - Privilegium maius - the Great Austrian Privilege - and its historical content. The authors of the complex of forged charters, compiled with the participation of Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg in 1358 or 1359, could not do without two privileges allegedly granted to Austria by... Julius Caesar and Nero. The content of these two forgeries reveals the ideas of the Roman past that existed in the middle of the 14th century at diverse princely courts in the Germanic lands.
