Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Convergence of Array DBMS and Cellular Automata: A Road Traffic Simulation Case

P. 2399–2403.
Rodriges Zalipynis R. A.

Array DBMSs manage big N-d arrays, are not yet widely known, but are experiencing an R&D surge due to the rapid growth of array volumes. Cellular automata (CA) operate on a discrete lattice of cells that can be modeled by an N-d array. CA are successfully applied to model fire spread, land cover change, road traffic, and other processes. We made traffic CA simulations possible by array DBMS due to novel components: native UDF language, proactive exec plans, convolution operator, retiling strategy, array versioning, locks, virtual axes, etc. A database approach to CA brings powerful parallelization, data fusion, array processing, and interoperability to name a few. To our best knowledge, our work is the first to run end-to-end CA simulations completely inside array DBMS: we enable array DBMS to simulate the physical world for the first time.

Structure-based prediction of T cell receptor recognition of unseen epitopes using TCRen
Karnaukhov V. K., Shcherbinin D. S., Chugunov A. O. et al., Nature Computational Science 2024 Vol. 4 No. 7 P. 510–521
T cell receptor (TCR) recognition of foreign peptides presented by major histocompatibility complex protein is a major event in triggering the adaptive immune response to pathogens or cancer. The prediction of TCR-peptide interactions has great importance for therapy of cancer as well as infectious and autoimmune diseases but remains a major challenge, particularly for novel ...

FastMosaic in Action: A New Mosaic Operator for Array DBMSs
Rodriges Zalipynis R. A., PROCEEDINGS OF THE VLDB ENDOWMENT 2023 Vol. 16 No. 12 P. 3938–3941
Array DBMSs operate on 𝑁-d arrays. During the Data Ingestion phase, the widely used mosaic operator ingests a massive collection of overlapping arrays into a single large array, called mosaic. The operator can utilize sophisticated statistical and machine learning techniques, e.g. Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), to produce a high quality seamless mosaic where the contrasts ...

SimDB in Action: Road Traffic Simulations Completely Inside Array DBMS
Rodriges Zalipynis R. A., PROCEEDINGS OF THE VLDB ENDOWMENT 2022 Vol. 15 No. 12 P. 3742–3745
Array DBMSs operate on big N-d arrays. Cellular automata (CA) work on a discrete lattice of cells, essentially on N-d arrays. CA facilitate decision support as they realistically simulate complex phenomena including road traffic, fire spread, and urban growth. Array DBMSs can bring numerous benefits to the CA domain via a ``database approach'': powerful parallelization, ...

We simulate the drop-chain movement in the two-dimensional channel using the lattice Boltzmann method coupled with the Immersed Boundary approach. We choose the asymmetric initial state of the drop chain to generate drop oscillations and calculate the wave spectrum. The numerical results coincide qualitatively with the experimental results obtained in the quasi-two-dimensional microfluidic device. ...

Toward Cumulative Cognitive Science: A Comparison of Meta-Analysis, Mega-Analysis, and Hybrid Approaches
Koile E., Cristia A., Open Mind 2021 Vol. 1 No. 5 P. 154–173
There is increasing interest in cumulative approaches to science, in which instead of analyzing the results of individual papers separately, we integrate information qualitatively or quantitatively. One such approach is meta-analysis, which has over 50 years of literature supporting its usefulness, and is becoming more common in cognitive science. However, changes in technical possibilities by the widespread use of Python ...

Dynamic "molecular portraits" of biomembranes drawn by their lateral nanoscale inhomogeneities.
Efremov R., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2021 Vol. 22 No. 12 P. 1–20
To date, it has been reliably shown that the lipid bilayer/water interface can be thoroughly characterized by a sophisticated so-called “dynamic molecular portrait”. The latter reflects a combination of time-dependent surface distributions of various physicochemical properties, inherent in both model lipid bilayers and natural multi-component cell membranes. One of the most important features of biomembranes ...

In 2019, a new book by Lenhard was published. Lenhard attempts to separate computer simulations from classical mathematical modeling. Having structured the material accumulated over the years of research into three parts, Lenhard correctly, without starting the construction of revolutionary metaphysical concepts, takes the reader through the new world of the philosophy of computer simulations. ...
