For the first time, the book presents a comprehensive study of the transformation of the urban environment in the context of industrialization, urbanization, special colonization and militarization of the Soviet type, demonstrates the impact of these processes on the life and health of the urban population in the pre-war decade and during the Second World War, as well as ways of adapting the population to the conditions of extreme Soviet everyday life. The study identifies Union-wide trends and regional specificity of social processes on the example of the northern port city. The book is based on recently declassified archival documents, most of which have not been previously introduced into scientific circulation, and sources of personal origin, an additional corpus of which was made up of memoirs-interviews with residents of the city, collected personally by the author. The study fills the gap in Russian historiography in the study of the everyday life of “unremarkable (from the point of view of power) people” and their adaptation to the extreme conditions of everyday life in the era of industrialization, militarization and World War II. The data entered into scientific circulation can be in demand when creating monographs, collections of documents, databases and memory books.
