‘Working with AI Solves a Wide Range of Engineering Problems
Artificial intelligence is a working tool based on a balanced combination of algorithms and engineering. Experts and doctoral students from the HSE Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics explain how AI technologies can improve an application, device, or system, and what engineering tasks are solved in the process.

‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

On the Proximity of the Optimal Values of the Multi-dimensional Knapsack Problem with and Without the Cardinality Constraint

P. 16–22.
Чирков А. Ю., Gribanov D., Zolotykh N.

We study the proximity of the optimal value of the m-dimensional knapsack problem to the optimal value of that problem with the additional restriction that only one type of items is allowed to include in the solution. We derive exact and asymptotic formulas for the precision of such approximation, i.e. for the infinum of the ratio of the optimal value for the objective functions of the problem with the cardinality constraint and without it. In particular, we prove that the precision tends to 0.59136…/m if n→∞ and m is fixed. Also, we give the class of the worst multi-dimensional knapsack problems for which the bound is attained. Previously, similar results were known only for the case m=1.

Remizov I., Applied Mathematics and Computation 2018 Vol. 328 P. 243–246
We present a general method of solving the Cauchy problem for a linear parabolic partial differential equation of evolution type with variable coefficients and demonstrate it on the equation with derivatives of orders two, one and zero. The method is based on the Chernoff approximation procedure applied to a specially constructed shift operator. It is ...

Inspired by human learning mechanisms, a novel meta-heuristic algorithm named human learning optimization (HLO) is presented in this paper in which the individual learning operator, social learning operator, random exploration learning operator and re-learning operator are developed to generate new solutions and search for the optima by mimicking the human learning process. Then HLO is ...
