'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

All-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 and Cs4PbBr6 nanoparticles are being intensively studied due to their unique properties and wide range of applications; however, however, the nature of their optical properties is not yet fully understood due to the difficulty of synthesis of singlephase nanoparticles. In this article we describe the features of the synthesis of single-phase particles ...

Algorithmic overlaps as thermodynamic variables: from local to cluster Monte Carlo dynamics in critical phenomena
Pilé I., Deng Y., Shchur L., / Series arXiv "math". 2026. No. 2604.10254.
We investigate the spatial overlap of successive spin configurations in Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations using the local Metropolis algorithm and the Svendsen-Wang and Wolff cluster algorithms. We examine the dynamics of these algorithms for two models in different universality classes: the Ising model and the Potts model with three components. The overlap of two ...

Multiphosphorylated molecules for buried interface regulation of inverted perovskite solar cells in a two-step process
Luo S., Bi Z., Xiong L. et al., Energy and Environmental Sciences 2026 Vol. 19 No. 6 P. 2069–2083
The insufficient coverage of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and inadequate control of the buried interface of perovskite still limited the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we report a reinforcing SAM and managing perovskite buried interface strategy using ethylenediamine tetramethylenephosphonic acid (EAPA) to address these challenges. Firstly, the EAPA solution washes away the unbound or ...

Predicting viscosity-concentration dependencies of binary organic mixtures using molecular dynamics methods
Kashurin O., Deshchenya V., Kondratyuk N., Fluid Phase Equilibria 2025 Vol. 589 Article 114244
The shear viscosity of organic liquids is very important for industrial applications. This paper focuses on the blind prediction of concentration-viscosity dependencies for organic mixtures at 298.15 K and 1 bar using molecular dynamics methods. Two mixtures are considered: tributyrin+1-decanol and 1,2-butanediol+1-decanol. The interatomic interactions are described using the COMPASS force field, which is modified ...

Understanding the role of confinement in the behavior of ionic liquid–organic solvent mixtures in slit carbon micropores: Insights from molecular dynamics
Darya Gurina, Budkov Y., Journal of Molecular Liquids 2025 Vol. 419 Article 126734
In this study, we used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of diluting [EMIM][NTf2] with DMSO on the behavior of the electrolyte within negatively charged slit-like micropores. Our results demonstrate clear differences in electrolyte composition between confined and bulk phase. Increasing the DMSO content leads to higher concentrations of counterions within the pores, particularly ...

Doping dependence of low-energy charge collective excitations in high-Tc cuprates
Kagan M., Silkin V. M., Efremov D. V., / Series arXiv "math". 2024. No. 2411.12836.
In this study, we analyze the dielectric function of high-Tc cuprates as a function of doping level, taking into account the full energy band dispersion within the CuO2 monolayer. In addition to the conventional two-dimensional (2D) gapless plasmon mode, our findings reveal the existence of three anomalous branches within the plasmon spectrum. Two of these branches ...

The Dicer protein is an indispensable player in such fundamental cell pathways as miRNA biogenesis and regulation of protein expression in a cell. Most recently, both germline and somatic mutations in DICER1 have been identified in diverse types of cancers, which suggests Dicer mutations can lead to cancer progression. In addition to well-known hotspot mutations ...

Superconducting spin valves based on a single spiral magnetic layer
Pugach N., Safonchik M. O., Belotelov V. et al., / Series "cond-mat". 2022. No. 2110.00369.
A detailed investigation of a superconducting spin-triplet valve is presented. This spin-valve consists of a superconducting film covering a metal with an intrinsic spiral magnetic order, which could result from competing isotropic exchanges or, if the crystal lattice breaks central symmetry, from asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange. Depending on the anisotropy, such a metal may change its ...

Charge transport in the spatially correlated exponential random energy landscape: effect of the non-positive correlation function
Novikov S. V., / Series cond-mat "arxiv.org". 2022. No. 2209.14955.
Charge transport in amorphous semiconductors having spatially correlated exponential density of states (DOS) has been considered for the arbitrary behavior of the correlation function of random energies. Average carrier velocity is exactly calculated for the quasi-equilibrium (nondispersive) transport regime. For the symmetric exponential DOS with exponential tails for low and high energies and non-positive correlation ...
