Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

A Tutorial on Mathematical Modeling of 5G/6G Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Cellular Systems
Moltchanov D., Sopin E., Begishev V. et al., IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials 2022 Vol. 24 No. 2 P. 1072–1116
Millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) radio access technologies (RAT) are expected to become a critical part of the future cellular ecosystem providing an abundant amount of bandwidth in areas with high traffic demands. However, extremely directional antenna radiation patterns that need to be utilized at both transmit and receive sides of a link to ...

Prove them wrong: Do professional athletes perform better when facing their former clubs?
Assanskiy A., Shaposhnikov D., Tylkin I. et al., Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics 2022 Vol. 98 Article 101879
In this paper, we investigated the influence of competition with a former employer on employees’ performance by examining how athletes in team sports play against their former clubs. Using the data on individual players’ performances in multiple seasons of the NBA, NHL, and major European soccer leagues, we constructed several PPML and OLS models to ...

Method of Performance Analysis of Time-Critical Applications Using DB-Nets
Rigin A., Shershakov Sergey Andreevich, Proceedings of the Institute for System Programming of the RAS 2021 Vol. 33 No. 3 P. 109–122
These days, most of time-critical business processes are performed using computer technologies. As an example, one can consider financial processes including trading on stock exchanges powered by electronic communication protocols such as the Financial Information eXchange (FIX) Protocol. One of the main challenges emerging with such processes concerns maintaining the best possible performance since any ...

Flexible and Reliable UAV-Assisted Backhaul Operation in 5G mmWave Cellular Networks
Moltchanov D., IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications 2018 Vol. 36 No. 11 P. 2486–2496
To satisfy the stringent capacity and scalability requirements in the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks, both wireless access and backhaul links are envisioned to exploit millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. Here, similar to the design of access links, mmWave backhaul connections must also address many challenges such as multipath propagation and dynamic link blockage, which calls ...

Improving Session Continuity with Bandwidth Reservation in mmWave Communications
Moltchanov D., IEEE Wireless Communications Letters 2018 P. 1–1
Unexpected fluctuations in radio resource demands of active sessions in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems caused by dynamic blockage of the line-of-sight path may lead to accidental session drops. Existing solutions addressing this problem incorporate multi-connectivity operation that reroutes an ongoing session to another mmWave access point (AP) nearby. We introduce and analyze an alternative approach for ...

Performance analysis of simultaneous communications in bacterial nanonetworks
Komarov M. M., Deng B., Petrov V. et al., Nano Communication Networks 2016 No. 8 P. 55–67
Utilizing biological components for data transfer is considered as a promising technique for communications at nanoscales. The ability to store data in its DNA strands as well as natural mobility make agellated bacteria a good candidate for such systems. The use of advanced mechanisms such as replication-based encoding and conjugation to improve the per- formance ...
