The aim of this study is to give a brief overview of contemporary approaches (i.e., design/hardware obfuscation techniques) to protecting design (hardware) from various security threats – reverse engineering, IP piracy, tampering. The paper describes several existing and acknowledged technical solutions for design obfuscation as based on the analysis of patents published in the recent years. Eventually it substantiates the argument that it is essential to explore new hardware-efficient methods to combat the existing hardware attacks
