Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

Diverse Interactions of Sterols with Amyloid Precursor Protein Transmembrane Domain Can Shift Distribution Between Alternative Amyloid-β Production Cascades in Manner Dependent on Local Lipid Environment
Volynsky P., Urban A., Pavlov K. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2025 Vol. 26 No. 2 Article 553
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis is correlated with the membrane content of various lipid species, including cholesterol, whose interactions with amyloid precursor protein (APP) have been extensively explored. Amyloid-β peptides triggering AD are products of APP cleavage by secretases, which differ depending on the APP and secretase location relative to ordered or disordered membrane microdomains. We used high-resolution NMR to probe ...

Yusipovich A., Parshina E., Baizhumanov A. A. et al., Instruments and Experimental Techniques 2021 Vol. 94 No. 6 P. 877–885
An automated interference microscope has been used to determine the rms amplitude of fluctuations of living cells in vitro. The geometric thickness of cells has been calculated based on the measured optical path differences of light waves and the equivalent elastic constants of these cells have been estimated. The determined rms amplitude of fluctuations of the optical ...

Bitopic proteins having only one helical transmembrane (TM) domain are a class of biologically significant membrane proteins, including the type I receptors and amyloid precursor protein (APP), which are involved in regulating the homeostasis of human organism and recognized as substrate by c-secretase. Amyloid Ab-peptides forming plaques in brain during Alzheimer disease (AD) are the ...

Familial L723P Mutation Can Shift the Distribution between the Alternative APP Transmembrane Domain Cleavage Cascades by Local Unfolding of the Ε‑Cleavage Site Suggesting a Straightforward Mechanism of Alzheimer’s Disease Pathogenesis.
Bocharov E., Nadezhdin K., Urban A. et al., ACS Chemical Biology 2019 Vol. 14 No. 7 P. 1573–1582
Alzheimer’s disease is an age-related pathology associated with accumulation of amyloid-β peptides, products of enzymatic cleavage of amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) by secretases. Several familial mutations causing early onset of the disease have been identified in the APP transmembrane (TM) domain. The mutations influence production of amyloid-β, but the molecular mechanisms of this effect are ...

Proteins and membranes: born to be together. A computational view
Polyansky A., Kuznetsov A., Volynsky P. et al., , in: Biomembranes 2018. International Conference. 1-5 October 2018. Book of Abstracts.: Dolgoprudni: MIPT, 2018. P. 89–90.
A computational approach to the analysis of structural and dynamical properties of all components of model membranes - membrane proteins, lipids, water and ions - has been developed. It is established that local changes in the membrane environment play an important role in the binding of membrane-active peptides and peripherical membrane proteins, causing specific clustering ...

Bragin P. E., Kuznetsov A.S., Bocharova O. V. et al., Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Biomembranes 2018 Vol. 1860 No. 12 P. 2486–2498
The interaction between the elements of the secondary structure is the key process, determining the spatial structure and activity of a membrane protein. The transmembrane (TM) helix-helix interaction is known to be especially important for the function of so-called type I or bitopic membrane proteins, which have small TM domains, consisting of a single ⍺-helix. ...

Why human anti-Galα1–4Galβ1–4Glc natural antibodies do not recognize the trisaccharide on erythrocyte membrane? Molecular dynamics and immunochemical investigation
Volynsky P., Efremov R., Mikhalev I. et al., Molecular Immunology 2017 Vol. 90 P. 87–97
Background Human blood contains a big variety of natural antibodies, circulating throughout life at constant concentration. Previously, we have found natural antibodies capable of binding to trisaccharide Galα1-4Galβ1-4Glc (Pk) practically in all humans. Intriguingly, the same trisaccharide is a key fragment of glycosphingolipid globotriaosylceramide (Gb3Cer) – normal component of erythrocyte and endothelial cell membrane, i.e. the ...

Kuznetsov A., Polyansky A., Volynsky P. et al., , in: Computational Materials and Biological Sciences.: [б.и.], 2015. P. 139–150.
Membrane receptors are among the most important molecules in the cell. Their functioning determines the response of the cell to the external conditions. Also, they provide cellular communication and recognitionmechanisms. So, their proper functioning is a vital question of life. There is a lot of data today about these receptors. Many three-dimensional (3D) structures are ...

Logvenkov S. A., Штейн А. А., Российский журнал биомеханики 2013 Т. 17 № 4 С. 37–46
Basing on the information about the structure of the solution and asymptotic estimates in the problem of steady flow across the root, a system of algebraic relations similar to the commonly used compartment models is obtained. As compared with these, the method proposed has an important advantage making it possible to take into account the ...
