HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Non-linear damped standing slow waves in cooling coronal magnetic loops
Ruderman M. S., N. S. Petrukhin, Kataeva L. Y., Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 2025 Vol. 542 No. 2 P. 1076–1087
We study standing non-linear sausage waves in coronal loops with the plasma temperature varying with time. In our analysis we use the simplest model of a coronal loop in the form of a straight magnetic tube with a circular cross-section. We also assume that the plasma-beta is low. This enables us to neglect the magnetic ...

Comparative studies of tungsten surface damageability under irradiation with steady-state helium ion fluxes and pulsed helium ion and helium plasma fluxes in the ion-beam accelerator (ILU) and in the Vikhr Plasma Focus (PF) installation have been carried out. The parameters of irradiation with steady-state He+ ion fluxes in the ILU: helium ion energy of 30 ...

Физические процессы формирования и особенности плазменно-пылевой экзосферы Луны
Зелёный Л. М., Захаров А. В., Popel S. et al., Успехи физических наук 2024 Т. 194 № 6 С. 569–599
We review studies of physical processes associated with the impact of external factors in outer space — flows of micrometeoroids and solar radiation — on the lunar regolith. Under the influence of these factors, regolith microparticles can detach from the surface and levitate. Near-surface plasma and levitating dust particles form a plasma-dust exosphere of the ...

Damage to the Surface Layer of Inconel 718 Alloy by Pulsed Beam-Plasma Flows
Borovitskaya I. V., Demin A. S., Komolova O. A. et al., Inorganic Materials: Applied Research 2024 Vol. 15 No. 3 P. 596–605
Damage to the surface layer of the Inconel 718 alloy, manufactured by selective laser melting using additive technology followed by heat treatment, is studied under conditions of repeated pulsed exposure to flows of helium ions and helium plasma under two irradiation modes in the Vikhr Plasma Focus installation: in a soft mode with energy flux density q0 = ...

Кищик А. А., Aksenov S. A., Кищик М. С. et al., Физика металлов и металловедение 2023 Т. 124 № 6 С. 540–549
The effects of isothermal multidirectional forging (IMF) on the grain structure, second-phase particles of solidification origin, and dispersoids in the Al–4.9Mg–0.9Ni–0.9Fe–0.2Zr–0.1Sc alloy have been investigated. The strain distribution over the sample volume during forging in a closed die has been analyzed using a finite-element simulation. A method of considering the friction effect and changes in strain rate ...

The influence of pulsed helium ion (HI) and helium plasma (HP) fluxes on an Inconel 718 alloy fabricated by an additive technology via selective laser melting and subsequent heat treatment is studied. The structural changes in the surface layer (SL) after irradiation are analyzed for two different modes: soft (at radiation power density q = 2 × 108 ...

The effect of flow on transverse oscillations of two parallel magnetic tubes
Ruderman M. S., N. S. Petrukhin, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 2023 Vol. 523 No. 2 P. 2074–2082
We study oscillations of two parallel interacting magnetic tubes in the presence of plasma flow along the tubes. Using the cold plasma and thin tube approximations we derive the system of two equations describing these oscillations. This system of equations is valid for equilibria where the plasma density and flow velocity can vary along the ...

Kinetic Interaction between an Electron Flow with a Wide Velocity Spread and a Short-Adjusted Slipping Wave Pulse at the Cherenkov Resonance
Peter Bespalov, Kuleshova V., Savilov A., Symmetry 2023 Vol. 15 No. 4 Article 838
In this study, kinetic interaction at the Cherenkov resonance between an electromagnetic wave pulse and a flow of electrons possessing a wide velocity spread at the scale of the characteristic range of the resonant electron wave interaction is considered. Due to the absence of a distribution function slope in the range of velocities corresponding to ...

Effect of Transitional Layer on Frequency of Kink Oscillations
Ruderman M. S., Petrukhin N., Solar Physics 2022 Vol. 297 No. 6 Article 72
In this article we study the effect of a transitional layer in a magnetic tube on the real part of the frequencies of kink oscillations. In our analysis, we use the model of a straight magnetic tube with the density and cross-section radius varying along the loop, and the thin-tube thin-boundary (TTTB) approximation. First, we calculate the ...

In this article we study the plasma motion in the transitional layer of a coronal loop randomly driven at one of its footpoints in the thin-tube and thin-boundary-layer (TTTB) approximation. We introduce the average of the square of a random function with respect to time. This average can be considered as the square of the oscillation amplitude ...

We study kink oscillations of a straight magnetic tube in the presence of siphon flows. The tube consists of a core and a transitional or boundary layer. The flow velocity is parallel to the tube axis, has constant magnitude, and confined in the tube core. The plasma density is constant in the tube core and it monotonically decreases ...
