HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Lexicostatistical studies in Khoisan II/2: Towards a more precise phylogeny for the Tuu family
Starostin G., Journal of Language Relationship 2022 Vol. 20 No. 1-2 P. 25–70
The paper is the second part of an extensive study aimed at clarifying the internal relationships within the Tuu (Southern Khoisan) linguistic family of South Africa and reconstructing a reasonably accurate Swadesh wordlist for Proto-Tuu. In this section, I first investigate the issue of extensive areal contact between two languages belonging to two different subgroups ...

The value of "triangulation" in determining phylogenetic relationship: on the areal and genetic connections of the Berta languages
Starostin G., Language in Africa 2022 Vol. 3 No. 2 P. 352–367
In this paper, I argue against a recent attempt at re-classifying the small group of Berta languages, spoken in Ethiopia, as being closely related to the geographically adjacent East Jebel group, based on numerous lexical similarities between the two taxa. It is suggested that the best method to determine if these similarities are due to ...

Lexicostatistical studies in Khoisan II/1: How to make a Swadesh wordlist for Proto-Tuu
Starostin G., Journal of Language Relationship 2021 Vol. 19 No. 1-2 P. 99–135
The paper is the first in a planned two-part series, whose main goals are to conduct a general lexicostatistical survey of the Tuu, or South Khoisan, family of languages; to reconstruct a reliable approximation of the Swadesh wordlist for Proto-Tuu; and to clarify certain as of yet unresolved issues about the internal classification of Tuu ...

Is There Really a Common Linguistic Ancestor for All the Pygmies?
Starostin G., Anthropos 2020 Vol. 115 No. 2 P. 540–542
The ethnic, cultural, and linguistic prehistory of the so-called Pygmy populations of Central Africa remains one of the most important and exciting issues in African studies, given the striking anthropologic, cultural, and genetic differences between the Pygmies and most other ethnic groups of the continent. Although existing literature on the Pygmies is quite extensive, it ...

Lexicostatistical Studies in East Sudanic II: The Case of Nyimang
Starostin G., Journal of Language Relationship 2020 Vol. 18 No. 2 P. 111–125
The paper continues the authorʼs efforts to build up a lexicostatistical basis for the hypothesis of a genetic relationship between several African language groups and families collectively known as «East Sudanic». Here, on the basis of lexical comparison between core basic vocabularies, I argue that the small Nyimang language group of the Nuba Mountains is ...
