First, article provides an overview of recent and current Ukrainian, Belorussian, Polish, Russian and Western historiography dealing with discourses of proto-national identity in Ruthenian culture of XVth through the first half of the XVIIth centuries. Second, article maintains a critical assessment of studies, which claim that Ukrainian and Belorussian orthodox sources of this period excluded  Russians of Muscovy from the circle of “all-Russian” people. Some Ruthenian sources from the late XVIth and early XVIIth centuries have been analyzed, and this analysis shows that these sources contain the idea, that the Orthodox population of Muscovy and Rzecz Pospolita represented one religious and cultural community.
