Interpretation and evaluation of romantic love in the 20th century have a
collective dimension and are related to a historical and cultural, as well as moral,
thought. Reflections on love thus outgrow the ethical and psychological frame to
expand towards what we call today “theory” in an interdisciplinary meaning – theory
of culture, theory of literature, theory of human existence, as is well shown by the works
of Denis de Rougemont, René Girard and Roland Barthes.
