Personal Interest in Doctoral Thesis Topic Most Important for Confidence in Successful Defence
A researcher at HSE University analysed data on 1,539 doctoral students from 161 Russian universities to identify which features of a thesis topic are associated with academic success and engagement. The most important factor was found to be personal interest in the research topic, which was associated with almost all key aspects of doctoral programme experience—from engaging with the academic supervisor to research activity and confidence about successfully defending the thesis. The findings have been published in Higher Education.

Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

Magnetic properties of LiCu3O3: A quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a depleted square lattice
Bush A. A., S. K. Gotovko, Ivanov V. Y. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2024 Vol. 109 No. 11 Article 115151
LiCu3O3 is a novel two-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet with randomly depleted square lattice. The crystal structure contains two types of square planes with different Cu2+→Li+ substitution rates (20% and 40%). 7Li NMR and magnetization measurements performed on single crystals of LiCu3O3 revealed the occurrence of magnetic order at Tc1=123K and the change of the magnetic state ...

Low-frequency spin dynamics of the quasi-two-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO4)2
Soldatov T. A., A. I. Smirnov, Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 17 Article 174423
A quasi-two-dimensional quantum magnet with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, BaCdVO(PO4 )2, is studied using the magnetic resonance technique in a wide frequency range. The magnetic resonance spectra of the ordered phase confirm the collinear antiferromagnetic spin structure oriented along the a axis. The frequency-field diagram of antiferromagnetic resonance demonstrates two low-frequency excitation branches with different energy gaps, ...

Birefringence-mediated enhancement of the magneto-optical activity in anisotropic magnetic crystals
Ignatyeva D., Voronov A., Shilina P. et al., ACS Photonics 2022 Vol. 9 No. 8 P. 2767–2773
Optical anisotropy is usually treated as an unfavorable condition for the magneto-optical measurements since it is known to diminish the Faraday rotation concerning the case of the isotropic medium. Here we show that the situation could be quite opposite: a phenomenon of birefringence-mediated enhancement of the magneto-optical activity appears if the incident light polarization and ...

Dynamics of multiferroic LiCuVO4 influenced by electric field
Gotovko S.K., Marchenko V. I., Prokofiev A. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2021 Vol. 104 No. 21 Article 214415
We present the electron spin resonance study of the influence of an electric field on the low-field multiferroic magnetic state in LiCuVO4. The shift of the magnetic resonance spectra in the electric field has been observed experimentally. Symmetry analysis has been performed in order to describe the static properties of the magnetic system. The low-frequency dynamics ...

Thermal and magnetic properties and optical spectroscopy of SmCr3(BO3)4
Boldyrev K. N., Kuz'min N. N., Mukhin A. A. et al., PHYSICAL REVIEW MATERIALS 2021 Vol. 5 No. 10 Article 104413
We measured the heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, magnetoelectric effect, and optical spectra of samarium chromium borate crystals. It was found that, in SmCr3(BO3)4 single crystals, structures with the space groups R32 and C2/c may coexist. Magnetic phase transitions were discovered at temperatures TN1=7.8±0.5K, TN2=6.7±0.5K, and T3=4.3±0.2K, and assumptions about their nature were made. Based on the high-resolution optical spectra and magnetometry data, the ...

Dynamical spin susceptibility of a spin-valley half-metal
Khokhlov D. A., Rakhmanov A. L., Rozhkov A. V. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2020 Vol. 101 No. 23 P. 235141
A few years ago we predicted theoretically that in systems with nesting of the Fermi surface the spin-valley half-metal has lower energy than the spin density wave state. In this paper we suggest a possible way to distinguish these phases experimentally. We calculate the dynamical spin susceptibility tensor for both states in the framework of ...

Spin gap in the quasi-one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet K2CuSO4Cl2
A. I. Smirnov, Soldatov T. A., Povarov K. Y. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2018 Vol. 98 P. 144440
Electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments in the quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) S=12 antiferromagnet K2CuSO4Cl2 reveal the opening of a gap in the absence of magnetic ordering, as well as an anisotropic shift of the resonance magnetic field. These features of the magnetic excitation spectrum are explained by a crossover between a gapped spinon-type doublet ESR formed in ...

Quantum phase transitions and the degree of nonidentity in the system with two different species of vector bosons
Belemuk A. M., Chtchelkatchev N. M., Mikheyenkov A. V. et al., New Journal of Physics 2018 Vol. 20 No. 6 P. 1–13
We present new results for the system with two species of vector bosons in an optical lattice. In addition to the standard parameters characterizing such a system, we are dealing here with the 'degree of atomic nonidentity', manifesting itself in the difference of tunneling amplitudes and on-site Coulomb interactions. We obtain a cascade of quantum ...

Electron spin resonance in a model S=1/2 chain antiferromagnet with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction
Smirnov A., Soldatov T. A., Povarov K. Y. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2015 Vol. 92 P. 134417
The electron spin resonance spectrum of a quasi-1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet K2CuSO4Br2 was found to demonstrate an energy gap and a doublet of resonance lines in a wide temperature range between the Curie-Weiss and Neèl temperatures. This type of magnetic resonance absorption corresponds well to the two-spinon continuum of excitations in S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain with ...

Numeric calculation of antiferromagnetic resonance frequencies for the noncollinear antiferromagnet
Glazkov V., Yu.Krasnikova, Soldatov T., Applied Magnetic Resonance 2016 Vol. 47 P. 1069–1080
We present an algorithm for the numeric calculation of antiferromagnetic resonance frequencies for the noncollinear antiferromagnets of general type. This algorithm uses general exchange symmetry approach (Andreev and Marchenko, Sov. Phys. Usp. 130:39, 1980) and is applicable for description of low-energy dynamics of an arbitrary noncollinear spin structure in weak fields. Algorithm is implemented as a ...

Multi-particle composites in density-imbalanced quantum fluids
Burovskiy E., Jolicoeur T., Orso G., Physical Review Letters 2009 Т. 103 С. 215301
We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases with a density imbalance. While generically such fluids are two-component Luttinger liquids, we show that if the ratio of the densities is a rational number,  p/q, and mass asymmetry between components is sufficiently strong, one of the two eigenmodes acquires a gap. The gapped phase corresponds to (algebraic) ordering of (p+q )-particle composites. ...
