This paper examines the subject of national identity formation in Tanzania and how that correlates with ethnic identity. The paper is based on the fieldwork results derived from the data collected in the largest cities of Tanzania (Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar) during the research involving 374 people of different ethnic groups, denominations, regions of originating, social status etc. The research was focused on the large cities inhabitants especially because historically cities are the center of all new social processes including those connected with the new communities formation.
