‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Bakunina I. A., Мельников В.

I. A. Bakunina, Melnikov V. F., Shain A. V. et al., Geomagnetism and Aeronomy 2024 Vol. 64 No. 8 P. 1237–1249
Using statistics from 15 X-ray class M flare events, the features of the position and orientation of magnetic flux ropes in the general spatial structure of the magnetic field of the active region (AR) during flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) were studied by reconstructing the coronal magnetic field from the photosphere to the corona ...

Abramov-Maximov V. E., Bakunina I. A., Geomagnetism and Aeronomy 2024 Vol. 64 No. 7 P. 1054–1058
For the first time, several flare events are analyzed based on multifrequency observations using the Radio Solar Telescope Network. The purpose of the analysis is to identify signs of flare preparation. In all considered cases, preflare quasi-periodic fluctuations (QPFs) of radio emission were detected. The duration of preflare wavetrains is 6–20 min. Wavetrains consist of 3–5 pulses. QPFs ...

It is shown on a sample of 15 M-class X-ray flares that CMEs occur in events with «open» magnetic ropes reconstructed in the NLFFF approximation. Magnetic ropes coincide with radio brightness maxima at 17 GHz. Several hours before the flare, in the region of magnetic ropes, a glow of loops in the EUV (94, 131 ...

I. A. Bakunina, Melnikov V. F., Kuznetsov S. A. et al., Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, Netherlands 2023 Vol. 63 No. 8 P. 1154–1166
The dynamics of the magnetic field reconstructed in the nonlinear force-free approximation in the pre-flare and post-flare phases of M-class X-ray flares in seven active regions is considered: two flares with a coronal mass ejection (CME), two flares with eruption but no CMEs, and three flares without eruption. Abramov-Maximov V. E., I. A. Bakunina, Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, Springer, Switzerland 2023 Vol. 63 No. 7 P. 916–919
We present a study of the frequency of occurrence of quasi-periodic fluctuations (QPFs) of microwave radiation from solar active regions at the pre-flare stage. We used correlation curves obtained with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH). We analyzed 529 flares of classes X, M, and C (according to the GOES classification). In a significant number of considered events (approximately 75% ...

According to modern concepts, Type I noise storms in the meter wavelength range (30–400 MHz), consisting of a large number of narrow-band short bursts, are excited in the rarefied solar corona. These radiations are characterized by a high brightness temperature and circular polarization. Despite many advances in theory and confidence that the mechanism of radiation ...

Bakunina I. A., Мельников В. Ф., Шаин А. В. et al., Известия Крымской астрофизической обсерватории 2022 Т. 118 № 1 С. 65–74
To date, observational signs that determine the ability of  solar active region to cause an eruption of matter into the high layers of the solar corona (CME) are not entirely clear. This makes it difficult to understand the physical mechanism of the CME trigger. This paper presents a search for observational signs that may indicate ...
