At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Structured Bayesian Pruning via Log-Normal Multiplicative Noise

P. 6776–6785.
Neklyudov K. O., Molchanov D., Ashukha A., Vetrov D.

Dropout-based regularization methods can be regarded as injecting random noise with pre-defined magnitude to different parts of the neural network during training. It was recently shown that Bayesian dropout procedure not only improves generalization but also leads to extremely sparse neural architectures by automatically setting the individual noise magnitude per weight. However, this sparsity can hardly be used for acceleration since it is unstructured. In the paper, we propose a new Bayesian model that takes into account the computational structure of neural networks and provides structured sparsity, e.g. removes neurons and/or convolutional channels in CNNs. To do this we inject noise to the neurons outputs while keeping the weights unregularized. We establish the probabilistic model with a proper truncated log-uniform prior over the noise and truncated log-normal variational approximation that ensures that the KL-term in the evidence lower bound is computed in closed-form. The model leads to structured sparsity by removing elements with a low SNR from the computation graph and provides significant acceleration on a number of deep neural architectures. The model is very easy to implement as it only corresponds to the addition of one dropout-like layer in computation graph.

Free energy of neural network can predict accuracy after pruning
Surkov A., Sergei Koltcov, Ignatenko V. et al., Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications 2025 Vol. 681 Article 131085
Neural networks are powerful tools capable of achieving state-of-the-art performance across a wide range of tasks; however, their effectiveness often comes at the cost of extremely large numbers of parameters, which can hinder their deployment in resource-constrained environments. To address this issue, various pruning techniques have been proposed to reduce model size and complexity while ...

Neural Networks Compression for Language Modeling
Grachev A., Ignatov D. I., Savchenko A., , in: Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence. 7th International Conference, PReMI 2017, Kolkata, India, December 5-8, 2017, Proceedings. Lecture Notes in Computer Science book series (LNCS, volume 10597).: Springer, 2017. P. 351–357.
In this paper, we consider several compression techniques for the language modeling problem based on recurrent neural networks (RNNs). It is known that conventional RNNs, e.g., LSTM-based networks in language modeling, are characterized with either high space complexity or substantial inference time. This problem is especially crucial for mobile applications, in which the constant interaction with ...
