The 13th-Century Prerequisites of St. Gregory Palamas’ Theology
P. 321–322.
Макаров Д. И.
A new periodization of the thirteenth-century Byzantine theology is proposed. The impact of Gregory Palamas’ thirteenth-century predecessors upon the doctrine of essence and energies in God is analyzed, special attention beinggiven to the increasing role of the notion of interpenetration in Moschambar, Blemmydes, Gregory of Cyprus. In the second part of the paper Hesychast, apocryphal and Aristotelian motives are uncovered in Blemmydes’ treatise OnVirtue and Ascesis (ca.1265–1266).

A conversation with Dmitry Biryukov, Doctor of Philosophy, a researcher of the work of the late Byzantine theologian Gregory Palamas (1296–1359), is devoted to a discussion of the peculiarities of the doctrine of this authoritative church teacher, as well as the reception of his legacy in the 19th–20th centuries after centuries of oblivion. In the course of the conversation, ...

This article is a study of Pavel Florensky’s philosophy of symbol in the context of his discovery of Palamism in the 1910s, when Florensky started to speak of symbol using Palamite language. It proposes a fundamental difference between Florensky’s and Palamas’ teachings on symbol: Palamas views a natural symbol as the energy of an essence, while for Florensky ...

The article traces the main lines of the teaching of mind (noology) by one of the largest Byzantine thinkers, Gregory Palamas, on the material of his treatise Triads (1337–1340). The author considers the question of the foundations of thinking ability according to Palamas. Two paradigms – natural and super-natural – manifested in the noology by Palamas are ...

Gregory Palamas has faced a problem of compatibility of two theological provisions within his doctrine based on the distinction of substance and non-created activities in God: these are, firstly, that God is unalterable, and, secondly, that He acts accordingly with time in relation to the created world, in particular, having made the created being.
This background caused polemical ...

The acrticle is concerned with the vision of Western Church by rusian bookmen of the 11–12th centuries as it can be studied based on the “anti-latin” sermons, issued by rusian orthodox clergy of the time. These sermons are often regarded as badly composed and epigonic. Systematic comparison of such texts with their most probable prototyes ...

Nicholas Mesarites (ca. 1163/1164 – post 1214) was rather a “theologian of transition”, than an independent thinker. Yannis Spiteris discovered in 1977 that the entire chapter on the primacy of Rome in Mesarites’ treatise The Account of the Political and Ecclesiastical Events of the Year 1214 turned out to be a large quote from the ...

The paper deals with the most controversial – in the modern scholarly discussion – episode within the Byzantine polemics on the Filioque, Nicephorus Blemmydes‘ acknowledgement of proceeding of the Spirit through the Son providing that the Son be considered as generated through the Spirit. The logical intuition behind this theological idea is explicated in the ...
