When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Local time evolution in Personal Communication Service model
Ziganurova L., Shchur L., Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2021 Vol. 1740 P. 1–8
We investigate the local time evolution in the Personal Communication Service (PCS) model simulated with the parallel discrete event simulation method's optimistic algorithm. We propose a model for the optimistic local virtual time evolution (OLVT) in PCS, which is reminiscent of statistical physics's surface growth. We use Rensselaer's optimistic simulation system with the Time Warp implementation. We compare the ...

We study synchronization aspects in parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) algorithms. Our analysis is based on the recently introduced model of virtual times evolution in an optimistic synchronization algorithm. This model connects synchronization aspects with the properties of the profile of the local virtual times. The main parameter of the model is a “growth rate” ...

Simulation of Virtual Time Profile in Conservative Parallel Discrete Event Simulation Algorithm for Small-World Network
Shchur L., Ziganurova L., Lobachevskii Journal of Mathematics 2017 Vol. 38 No. 5 P. 967–970
We simulate model for evolution of local virtual time profile in conservative parallel discrete event the simulation (PDES) algorithm with long-range communication links. The main findings of simulation are that i) growth exponent depends logarithmically on the concentration p of long-range links; ii) utilisation of processing elements time decreases slowly with p. Thismeans that the ...

Properties of the Conservative Parallel Discrete Event Simulation Algorithm
Ziganurova L., Shchur L., Lecture Notes in Computer Science 2017 Vol. 10421 P. 246–253
We address question of synchronisation in parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) algorithms. We study synchronisation in conservative PDES model adding long-range connections between processing elements. We investigate how fraction of the random long-range connections in the synchronisation scheme influences the simulation time profile of PDES. We found that small fraction of random distant connections enhance synchronisation, namely, the width of the ...

Model for the evolution of the time profile in optimistic parallel discrete event simulations
Ziganurova L, Novotny M. A., Shchur L., Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2016 Vol. 681 P. 012047-1–012047-6
We investigate synchronisation aspects of an optimistic algorithm for parallel discrete event simulations (PDES). We present a model for the time evolution in optimistic PDES. This model evaluates the local virtual time profile of the processing elements. We argue that the evolution of the time profile is reminiscent of the surface profile in the directed ...

Relation of Parallel Discrete Event Simulation algorithms with physical models
Shchur L., Shchur L., Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2015 Vol. 640 P. 012065We extend concept of local simulation times in parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) in order to take into account architecture of the current hardware and software in high-performance computing. We shortly review previous research on the mapping of PDES on physical problems, and emphasise how physical results may help to predict parallel algorithms behaviour.

Parallel discrete event simulation with AnyLogic

Nowadays simulation modeling is applied for solving a wide range of problems. There are simulations which require significant performance and time resources. To decrease overall simulation time a model can be converted to a distributed system and executed on a computer network. The goal of this project is to create a library enabling clear and ...
