Grade expectations: Rationality and overconfidence
Magnus J., Peresetsky A.
Overconfidence seems to be an essential aspect of human nature, and one way to study overconfidence is to consider students’ forecasts of their exam grades. Part of a student’s grade expectation is based on the student’s previous academic achievements; what remains can be interpreted as (over)confidence. In this paper we study overconfidence using a sample of about five hundred second-year undergraduate students enrolled in a statistics course in Moscow. The course contains three exams and each student produces a forecast for each of the three exams. Students’ expectations are not rational and most of students are overconfident, which is in agreement with what most people find. Less obvious findings are that overconfidence is helpful: given the same academic achievement students with larger confi- dence get higher exam grades. Female students are less overconfident than male students, their forecasts are more rational, and they are also faster learners in the sense that they adjust their expectations more rapidly.

The study focuses on the cognitive mechanisms associated with teachers’ work with new, conceptually complex material, both when they are experts in philological analysis and when they design the acquisition of subject matter. The scientific novelty of the article lies in its interdisciplinary approach, which allows for an explanation of the interaction between “threshold” subject ...

We consider the macroscopic limit for the space-time density fluctuations in the open symmetric simple exclusion in the quasi-static scaling limit. We prove that the distribution of these fluctuations converge to a gaussian space-time field that is delta correlated in time but with long-range correlations in space. ...

Currently, artificial intelligence occupies a solid place among traditional pedagogical technologies and approaches, which is the subject of widespread discussion among domestic and foreign scientists and researchers. This is because the introduction of AI into higher education, despite its high potential, faces a wide range of economic, social, and ethical obstacles. These include resistance to ...

We study the celebrated Shiryaev-Wonham filter (Wonham, W.M., in J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 347–369, 1964) in its historical setup, where the hidden Markov jump process has two states. Within narrowly defined industries, the most productive firms produce far more than the least productive from the same inputs, and this dispersion widens in downturns. We build a tractable representative-agent model in which financial frictions—adverse selection and moral hazard—make firms sort endogenously into lenders, strategic defaulters, and producers. As credit conditions vary, the resulting misallocation ...

This work develops a tractable model of price competition in fragmented markets where consumers consider both local and distant varieties, with cross-regional purchases subject to stochastic costs.
