When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Обратный эффект близости в гетероструктурах сверхпроводник–ферромагнитный диэлектрик
Селезнёв Д. В., Yagovtsev V., Pugach N. et al., Физика металлов и металловедение 2023 Т. 124 № 2 С. 196–203
The magnetization induced in a superconductor due to the reverse proximity effect is studied in hybrid structures containing a superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. The study was carried out within the method of semiclassical Green’s functions, in which the Usadel equations are solved numerically with boundary conditions suitable for strongly spin-polarized ferromagnetic materials. The conversion ...

Динамический эффект близости в гибридных структурах сверхпроводник/ферромагнитный диэлектрик
Turkin Y. V., Pugach N., Екомасов Е. Г. et al., Физика металлов и металловедение 2023 Т. 124 № 1 С. 42–48
This paper presents a theoretical study of the dynamics of the induced magnetization and spin current arising in a layer of an dirty superconductor due to the proximity to a ferromagnetic dielectric with a uniform periodically precessing magnetization. The dynamics of the observed physical quantities is described within the semi-classical Usadel–Floquet formalism, which makes it possible to study ...

The inverse proximity effect in strong ferromagnet–superconductor structures
Yagovtsev V., Gusev N., Pugach N. et al., Superconductor Science and Technology 2021 Vol. 34 Article 025003
The magnetization in a superconductor induced due to the inverse proximity effect is  investigated in hybrid bilayers containing a superconductor and a ferromagnetic  insulator or a strongly spin-polarized ferromagnetic metal. The study is performed  within a quasiclassical Green function framework, wherein Usadel equations are solved  with boundary conditions appropriate for strongly spin-polarized ferromagnetic  materials. A comparison with recent experimental data ...

Competitive 0 and π states in S/F/S trilayers: Multimode approach
Karabassov T., Stolyarov V. S., Golubov A. A. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2019 Vol. 100 No. 10 P. 104502-1–104502-9
We investigate the behavior of the critical temperature T_c in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) trilayers in the dirty limit as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness d_f and the S/F interface transparency. We perform T_c calculations using the general self-consistent multimode approach based on the Usadel equations in Matsubara Green’s functions technique, and compare the results ...

Second-Harmonic Current-Phase Relation in Josephson Junctions with Ferromagnetic Barriers
Stoutimore M. J., Rossolenko A. N., Bolginov V. V. et al., Physical Review Letters 2018 Vol. 121 No. 177702 P. 177702-1–177702-5
We report the observation of a current-phase relation dominated by the second Josephson harmonic in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junctions. The exotic current-phase relation is realized in the vicinity of a temperature-controlled 0-to-π junction transition, at which the first Josephson harmonic vanishes. Direct current-phase relation measurements, as well as Josephson interferometry, non-vanishing supercurrent and half-integer Shapiro steps at ...

Protected 0-p states in SIsFS junctions for Josephson memory and logic
Bakurskiy S. V., Klenov N. V., Soloviev I. I. et al., / Series cond-mat "arxiv.org". 2018. No. 1808.07090.
We study the peculiarities in current-phase relations (CPR) of the SIsFS junction in the region of 0 to p transition. These CPR consist of two independent branches corresponding to 0− and p− states of the contact. We have found that depending on the transparency of the SIs tunnel barrier the decrease of the s-layer thickness leads to transformation ...

Superconducting spin valves controlled by spiral re-orientation in MnSi
Pugach N., Safonchik M., Champel T. et al., / Series cond-mat "arxiv.org". 2017. No. 1702.08828.
We propose a superconducting spin-triplet valve of a new type. This spin valve consists of a bilayer that involves a superconductor and an itinerant magnetic material, with the magnet showing an intrinsic non-collinear magnetic order characterized by a wave vector Q that may be aligned in a few equivalent preferred directions under control of a weak external magnetic ...
