Neural Network Maps as a Method for Constructing Mathematical Models
Scientists from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute of Physics Belgrade, Serbia, are jointly exploring the application of machine learning techniques and neural networks to the study of nonlinear dynamics. Natalya Stankevich, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, spoke to the HSE News Service about this international project.

‘In the Age of Technology, It Is Interesting to Look into the Past and Think about What We Can Take from It
Polina Tabakova decided to apply for a Philology degree at HSE in Nizhny Novgorod because she grew up in Mari El and did not want to move far away from the Russian forests. In an interview for the Young Scientists of HSE University project, she spoke about the genre of the campus novel, the existential drama of Kolobok, and a blackout version of Eugene Onegin.

HSE Scientists Develop Method to Compress Large Language Models Without Losing Quality
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new compression method for large language models such as GPT and LLaMA that reduces their size by 25–36% without additional training or significant loss of accuracy. This is the first approach to use mathematical transformations—specifically, rotations of model weights—to make models more amenable to compression with structured matrices. The study results have been published in ACL Findings 2025. The code is available on GitHub.

The paper reviews existing studies on the relationship between education and generalized trust. Education positively affects trust through the number of ways, including: 1) enhancing cognitive capacities and reducing the risks of deception; 2) promoting common moral norms and values; 3) reducing intergroup tension through intergroup contacts. Recent empirical studies demonstrate that these channels are not universal, but depend ...

Objective. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between political efficacy and attitudes to the political system in Russia. Background. Self-determination theory posits that individuals express more positive attitudes toward those who create an autonomy-supportive climate than toward those who create a controlling climate. Some studies conducted in democratic political regimes have shown that political efficacy, ...

Vlasova V., Saprykina A., Economics of Innovation and New Technology 2024 Vol. 33 No. 8 P. 1096–1120
The role of innovation as a major force of economic growth is not to doubt. Despite this, geopolitical challenges in recent years pose difficulties for countries, especially for those that struggle with lower per-capita GDP, to enhance innovative performance and grow. Building upon the national innovation system concept and using the methodological framework of country-level ...

Generalized trust and military attitudes in Russia: The role of national and global human identification
Gulevich O., Osin E. N., British Journal of Social Psychology 2023 Vol. 62 No. 3 P. 1566–1579
Generalized trust is an optimistic view of human nature that influences people's attitudes and behaviour. Most studies focus on the positive effects of generalized trust. However, there is evidence suggesting that generalized trust may be associated with both positive and negative outcomes. In the present study, we focus on the ambivalent associations of generalized trust with the Russians' ...

Contemporary Russia has a low level of trust. Collective leisure can shape trusting behavior. There is a variety of leisure activities, including nightlife — places that work after midnight. Although such places are often associated with deviant behavior, in many European cities nighttime leisure begins to institutionalize. At the same time, nightclubs in the capital ...
