‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Long-range interactions between membrane inclusions: Electric field induced giant amplification of the pairwise potential
E. S. Pikina, Muratov A. R., Kats E. I. et al., Annals of Physics, Elsevier 2022 Vol. 447 Article 168916
The aim of this work is to revisit the phenomenological theory of the interaction between membrane inclusions, mediated by the membrane fluctuations. We consider the case where the inclusions are separated by distances larger than their characteristic size. Within our macroscopic approach a physical nature of such inclusions is not essential, however we have always in ...

The influence of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) modification on the transport properties and fuel cell performance of Nafion-117 membranes
Stenina Irina A., Yurova P., Titova T. et al., Journal of Applied Polymer Science 2021 Vol. 138 No. 27 Article 50644
Nafion-117/PEDOT composite membranes were synthesized by in situ chemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant. The polymerization of EDOT in Nafion membranes for various EDOT/oxidant treatment sequences was studied for the first time. PEDOT introduction leads to a slight decrease in both the ion-exchange capacity and water uptake of the composite ...

Membranes with novel highly-delocalized sulfonylimide anions for lithium-ion batteries
Golubenko D. V., Yaroslavtsev A. B., Voropaeva D. et al., Journal of Membrane Science 2020 Vol. 601 P. 117918
Cation-exchange membranes containing sulfo R–SO3M and sulfonylimide functional groups [R–SO2NSO2–X]M, where X¼CCl3, CF3, Ph, p-NO2Ph, p-CF3Ph and Mþ¼Li/Na/H, have been synthesized by the Hinsberg reaction from the polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene block copolymer. The obtained membranes have been characterized using ATR IR spectroscopy, CHNS elemental analysis, TGA, DSC, SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis, as well as mechanical properties ...

Novel anion exchange membrane with low ionic resistance based on chloromethylated/quaternized‐grafted polystyrene for energy efficient electromembrane processes
Golubenko D. V., Van der Bruggen B., Yaroslavtsev A. B., Journal of Applied Polymer Science 2020 Vol. 137 No. 19 P. 48656
A novel anion-exchange membrane has been manufactured by chloromethylation and subsequent quaternization of polystyrene within a graft copolymer films based on UV-oxidized polymethylpentene. Particular attention is given to the kinetics of chloromethylation and the influence of the reaction conditions on the properties of the anion-exchange membranes. By means of variation of the polystyrene content and ...

Polymer Electrolytes for LIBs based on Perfluorinated Sulfocationic Nepem-117 Membrane and Aprotic Solvents
Yaroslavtsev A. B., Voropaeva D., Novikova S. et al., Journal of Physical Chemistry B 2019 Vol. 123 No. 48 P. 10217–10223
Polymer electrolytes have been obtained by using Nepem-117 membranes in a Li+ form intercalated by polar aprotic solvents, such as dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and dimethylacetamide (DMA), and solvent mixtures, such as ethylene carbonate-propylene carbonate (EC-PC), EC-DMA, EC-PC-DMA, and EC-PCDMA-tetrahydrofuran. The obtained electrolytes have been characterized by IR impedance and 7Li pulsed field gradient NMR ...

Improving the conductivity and permselectivity of ion-exchange membranes by introduction of inorganic oxide nanoparticles: impact of acid–base properties
Golubenko D. V., Shaydullin R., Yaroslavtsev A. B., Colloid and Polymer Science 2019 Vol. 297 No. 5 P. 741–748
In the present paper, the influence of acid–base properties of inorganic particles in ion-exchange membrane-based nanocomposites on their physicochemical and transport properties was investigated. For this purpose, particles of Zr, Ti, and Si oxides have been synthesized in situ in the system of pores and channels of the membranes. Depending on the acid–base properties of ...

Управление колебаниями мембран и пластин с помощью граничных сил
Romanov I., Shamaev A., Доклады Академии наук 2011 Т. 438 № 3 С. 318–322
We consider the control of vibrations of membranes and plates with a constraint imposed on the absolute value of the control function. The goal of the control is to drive a given mechanical system to the equilibrium point (or the ε-neighborhood of an equilibrium point) in a finite time. ...
