The subject of research: the present article studies the experience of research into and adoption of the Automatic information search system in investigation practice in Russia and abroad. This system is designed to create psychological profiles of unestablished criminals, mainly of those who have committed grave personal crimes. Furthermore, the article presents author’s conception of the common structure and functions of such systems. It also provides data concerning the efficiency of this system and the expediency of applying it to specific cases. Moreover, the article gives theoretical ground for creating a psychological portrait of a criminal based on the capacities of mathematical statistics and psychological analysis. Methods of research: in the course of research the author applied common scientific methods of analysis, synthesis and comparison, as well as functional method and systematic approach. He analyzed mathematical and psychological methods of studying information concerning crime.Scientific novelty and conclusions: the working algorithms of various automatic database search systems were analyzed on the basis of Russian and foreign sources, and the reliability of produced data was assessed. The author studied the structure of foreign functioning program complexes and similar systems, which are developed in Russia. Taking into account this information, the author provides suggestions on the functioning of a new Russian automatic information search system, which will be designed to create psychological profiles, reveal the signs of seriation and register persons from risk groups. The author makes conclusions about the validity of profiling grave crimes from the point of mathematical statistics and psychological analysis.
