Князья, книги и книжники в домонгольской Руси
The article deals with analysis of complexed and not always clear to a historian relations developed between the old Russian scribes and the princes, their main clients who ordered the codexes. The author puts before himself some principal questions, i.e. for what purpose this or that codex was made, who was the scibe who had written it, what was his social status, why the client addressed this particular scribe, what were the conditions in which that scribe worked and what relations developed between him and his client. As it is shown in the article, without the answer to these questions our notions about the book culture of pre-Mongol Rus', about the contents of the books and about the structure and composition of the then libraries may be considerably distored.
