Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

Algebra, Geometry, and AI: Russian and Vietnamese Mathematicians Discuss Current Research
A delegation of scientists from Hanoi visited the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and then took part in a Russian-Vietnamese conference in St Petersburg. The events were part of the three-year project ‘Flexibility and Computational Methods.’ Over the course of the project, the researchers have prepared joint publications and obtained new mathematical results.

When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

Система управления уровнем акустического сигнала в зависимости от уровня шума в помещении

С. 305–309.
Gudkov Y., Safonov S., Tuv A.
The paper considers the system to control the level of the acoustic signal depending on the noise levels in the room. The focus is on the software part of the system. Comparison of methods of implementing control systems, not How many variants comparison algorithms and their capabilities. The description of software implementation and results of testing of the developed software.

Good-Enough Sentence Processing in Adolescents and Adults under No-Noise and Auditory-Linguistic- Noise Conditions
Nikiforova A., Lopukhina A., Malyutina S. et al., The Russian Journal of Cognitive Science 2019 Vol. 6 No. 2 P. 25–32
According to modern syntactic theories, sentence comprehension can rely not only on grammatically driven algorithmic parsing of grammatical structure but also on good-enough processing, according to which we establish relations between words based on their meanings and our world knowledge without building accurate syntactic relations. Therefore, a good-enough processing strategy may lead to forming incorrect ...

A Method for Measuring the Pitch Frequency of Speech Signals for the Systems of Acoustic Speech Analysis
Savchenko A., Savchenko V., Measurement Techniques 2019 Vol. 62 No. 3 P. 282–288
We developed a new method for measuring the pitch frequency of speech signals with elevated noise immunity. The problem of protection against intense background noise is solved in this method by the frequency selection of vocalized segments of speech signals according to a scheme with comb filter of interperiodic accumulation. The efficiency of the method ...

Effects of acoustic gradient noise from functional magnetic resonance imaging on auditory processing as reflected by event-related brain potentials
Novitski Nikolai, Alho K., Korzyukov O. et al., Neuroimage 2001 Vol. 14 P. 244–251
The processing of sound changes and involuntary attention to them has been widely studied with event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Recently, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been applied to determine the neural mechanisms of involuntary attention and the sources of the corresponding ERP components. The gradient-coil switching noise from the MRI scanner, however, is a challenge to any experimental design ...

Effects of noise from functional magnetic resonance imaging on auditory event-related potentials in working memory task
Novitski Nikolai, Anourova I., Martikauppi S. et al., Neuroimage 2003 Vol. 20 No. 2 P. 1320–1328
The effects of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) acoustic noise were investigated on the parameters of event-related responses (ERPs) elicited during auditory matching-to-sample location and pitch working memory tasks. Stimuli were tones with varying location (left or right) and frequency (high or low). Subjects were instructed to memorize and compare either the locations or frequencies of the ...

Frequency specific impairment of automatic pitch change detection by fMRI acoustic noise: An MEG study
Nikolai Novitski, Maess B., Tervaniemi M., Journal of Neuroscience Methods 2006 Vol. 155 P. 149–159
The loud acoustic noise produced by the magnetic resonance scanner is a major source of interference in auditory fMRI research. Whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to investigate the interaction between the frequency range of auditory stimulation and fMRI acoustic noise. Pure tones and 3-harmonic complexes varying between 240 and 1240 Hz in frequency were presented while participants attended to a ...
