HSE Scholar Presents Research on Postcards in Brazil and South Korea
Timur Khusyainov, Deputy Dean of theFaculty of Humanities atHSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, took part in two international conferences—the XVI World Congress of Rural Sociology in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and the 36th Annual Conference of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations (DH2026) in Daejeon, South Korea. On his way to the conferences, the researcher also visited several other places, where he presented the experience of the Pochtovoe educational project.

Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) is recognized as endangered species, therefore the study of its population structure is relevant for planning the environmental protection measures. As a part of this work GIS-analysis of the distribution of actual and potential nesting sites of the Steppe Eagle has been made, on the basis of which it was allocated 19 population groupings of this species area of which varies from 592 km (Turans- kaya) to 419,866 km (Western Kazakhstan). The abundance of nesting Steppe Eagles in these groupings is ranged from 10 to 12,000 nesting pairs. Maximum species resource is concentrated in the West-Kazakhstan population, and the entire western enclave of population groupings at one time of the whole population are more than 40 % of the total number of the world population of this species. The most ancient haplotypes, allocated on the basis of the analysis in the polymorphic region of mitochondrial DNA D-loop were found in the Kalmyk and West-Kazakhstan populations, in these populations the maximum haplotype diversity was developed. Genetic diversity of the Steppe Eagle decreases as we move to the east – the minimum number of haplotypes, and more young, is typical for the Steppe Eagle population in Dauria. Analysis of the birds distribution with different morphological characteristics and haplotypes of mitochondrial DNA in populations of Steppe Eagle on the area of its nesting area suggests that the species is of monotypicality, and there is no reason to divide it into two subspecies.

Khlyap L. A., Shvarts E., Baskevich M. I. et al., Zoology and Ecology 2017 Vol. 27 No. 2 P. 83–99
The article presents a complete species list of the modern mammal fauna and the zoogeographical analysis of the Valdai Lakeland (north-west of European Russia). The current state of the fauna therein is compared to the data reported by S.U. Stroganov in 1936. Results of the recently conducted genetic and ecological research are presented. New data ...
