‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Constructive description of Holder classes on a chord-arc curve in R^3
Alexeeva T., Shirokov N. A., St Petersburg Mathematical Journal 2025 Vol. 36 No. 1 P. 25–39
Let L be a chord-arc curve in R3. We introduce a functional class Hr+ω(L) where a modulus of continuity ω satisfies the Dini condition and r≥1. We define neighborhoods of L Ωδ(L)=⋃M∈LBδ(M), Bδ(M)={X∈R3:∥XM∥<δ} and set HarmΩδ(L) for harmonic functions in Ωδ(L). The Theorem 1 states that if f∈Hω+r(L) then there exist functions vδ∈HarmΩδ(L) such that ∣∣f(X)−vδ(M)∣∣≤cfδrω(δ), M∈L, and ∣∣∂αvδ(M)∣∣≤cfω(δ)δ, M∈Ωδ(L), |α|=r+1. The Theorem 2 states that if a function f defined on L satisfies claim of Theorem 1 then f∈Hω+r(L). ...

A Clustering Model for Stocks that Considers Hidden Dynamics and Price Trajectory
Morychev G., Sizykh D., Sizykh N., IEEE Access 2025 Vol. 13 P. 213194–213210
One of the main tools for analyzing large volumes of financial data is the use of clustering methods and models, which allow the identification of various patterns. This study examines the problem of clustering time series that reflect the behavior of prices, yields, modes, trends, and a number of related stock indicators. The relevance and ...

Processes with catastrophes: Large deviation point of view
A. Logachov, Logachova O., Yambartsev A., Stochastic Processes and their Applications 2024 Vol. 176 Article 104447
In this paper, we propose a new definition of catastrophes and present our results on large deviations for Poisson processes with catastrophes that satisfy this definition. Our earlier work focused on (almost) uniformly distributed catastrophes, but the current paper extends the results to a larger class of catastrophes. We show that the rate function remains ...

Конструктивное описание гёльдеровских пространств на chord-arc кривой в R^3
Alexeeva T., Shirokov N. A., Алгебра и анализ 2024 Т. 36 № 1 С. 40–59
On the chord-arc curve in R^3 classes of functions similar to Hölder functions with smoothness greater than unity are defined. A constructive description of these classes is obtained in terms of the rate of approximation of functions from them by functions that are harmonic in neighborhoods contracting to the curve. The choice of defining these classes ...

Классы Гёльдера в L^p-норме на chord-arc кривой в R^3
Alexeeva T., Shirokov N. A., Алгебра и анализ 2022 Т. 34 № 4 С. 1–21
We define Holder classes L^p_α(L) in the L^p(L) norm on a chord-arc curve L in R^3 and prove direct and inverse approximation theorems for functions from these classes by functions harmonic in a neighborhood of the curve. The approximation is estimated in the L^p(L) norm, and the smaller the neighborhood, the more accurate the approximation. ...

Risk-based availability modelling and reputation management on fault tolerant cloud computing systems
Mani D., Mahendran A., International Journal of Internet Technology and Secured Transactions 2019 Vol. 1 No. 2 P. 37–56
This paper exhibits a risk-based philosophy in cloud computing to estimate ideal quality and maintenance which maximise the high availability of cloud administration infrastructure. The procedure is confined into two stages: 1) accessibility displaying the cloud; 2) hazard based assessment. The projected procedure is practical to the healthcare scheme using Markov chain process. The proposed ...

The goal of the paper is to describe the large time behaviour of a symmetric diffusion in a high-contrast periodic environment and to characterize the limit process under the diffusive scaling. We consider separately the C_0 and L^2 settings. ...

The paper is concerned with a zero-sum continuous-time stochastic differential game with a dynamics controlled by a Markov process and a terminal payoff. The value function of the original game is estimated using the value function of a model game. The dynamics of the model game differs from the original one. The general result applied ...

Optimal Impulse Control of Dynamical Systems
Tumanov M., Piunovskly A., Plakhov A., Optimal Control Applications and Methods 2019 P. 1–21
Using the tools of the Markov Decision Processes, we justify the dynamic programming approach to the optimal impulse control of deterministic dynamical systems. We prove the equivalence of the integral and differential forms of the optimality equation. The theory is illustrated by an example from mathematical epidemiology. The developed methods can be also useful for ...

Kolokoltsov V., Fractional Calculus and Applied Analysis 2019 Vol. 22 No. 3 P. 543–600
This paper aims at unifying and clarifying the recent advances in the analysis of the fractional and generalized fractional Partial Differential Equations of Caputo and Riemann-Liouville type arising essentially from the probabilistic point of view. This point of view leads to the path integral representation for the solutions of these equations, which is seen to ...

No constructive description of functional classes on rather general surfaces in R3 and R4 has been presented in literature so far. The main result of the paper ...

Dirichlet’s and Thomson’s Principles for Non-selfadjoint Elliptic Operators with Application to Non-reversible Metastable Diffusion Processes
Landim C., Mariani M., Seo I., Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis 2019 Vol. 231 No. 2 P. 887–938
We present two variational formulae for capacity in the context of non-selfadjoint elliptic operators. The minimizers of these variational problems are expressed as solutions of boundary-value elliptic equations. We use these principles to provide a sharp estimate for the transition times between two different wells for non-reversible diffusion processes. This estimate permits us to describe ...
