Resource Race and Green Transition: Three Unexpected Conclusions from Foresight Centres Research on Climate and Poverty
Beneath the surface of green energy—which most people associate with solar panels, electric vehicles, and reduced CO2 emissions—lies a complex web of geopolitical interests, international inequality, and resource constraints. Researchers from the Laboratory for Science and Technology Studies (LST) at the HSE ISSEK Foresight Centre have published a series of articles in leading international journals on hidden and overt conflicts surrounding critically important metals and minerals, as well as related processes in the energy sector.

Immersion in Second Language Environment Influences Bilinguals Perception of Emotions
Researchers at the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre at the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have discovered how bilingual individuals process emotional words in their native (first) and non-native (second) languages. It was found that the link between word meaning and bodily sensations is weaker in a second language than in a first language. However, the more a person is immersed in a language environment, the smaller this difference becomes. The article has been published in Language, Cognition and Neuroscience.

The effect of spelling errors on reading tasks: A study on Russian
Slioussar N., Chernova D., Magomedova V. et al., The Mental Lexicon 2026 P. 1–31
Many studies on different languages analyzed how spelling errors are produced and detected. Recently, a new generalization was made for several languages: frequently misspelled words are read more slowly, even when they are written correctly and one knows how to spell them. This is explained by the lower quality of their lexical representations diluted by ...

Text reading in English as a second language: evidence from the Multilingual Eye-Movements Corpus
Kuperman V., Siegelman N., Schroeder S. et al., Studies in Second Language Acquisition 2023 Vol. 45 No. 1 P. 3–37
Research into bilingual reading and second language (L2) reading acquisition is an exponentially growing field. Yet, it still suffers from a relatively short supply of comparable, ecologically valid data from readers representing a variety of first languages (L1). This data scarcity, coupled with high heterogeneity of methods, tasks and populations in the present literature, hinders ...

Syntactic subordination affects discourse accessibility and subjective propositional importance: evidence from Russian
Bursov K., Slioussar N., Discourse Processes 2025 Vol. 62 No. 3 P. 155–176
Various coordinating and subordinating conjunctions that connect clauses differ in their structural properties. Such properties seem to influence discourse prominence: references to antecedents from main clauses are more frequent than from subordinate. Structurally, coordinate and subordinate clauses, as well as in-between cases, can be distinguished based on the degree of integration to the host clause. ...

To inflect, or not to inflect, that is the question: an experimental study of indeclinability in Russian
Chuprinko K., Slioussar N., Journal of Slavic Linguistics 2025 P. 1–16
We present two experiments in which Russian speakers used nonce nouns ending in \textit{-a, -o, -e, -i} and \textit{-u}, producing a form or selecting it from the list. Most forms from \textit{-a} stimuli were inflected, as expected. We also received many inflected answers for other stimuli, although real \textit{-i/u} nouns are always indeclinable, as well ...
