Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Network activity of mirror neurons depends on experience

Journal of Integrative Neuroscience, USA. 2013. Vol. 12. No. 1. P. 35–46.
Zinchenko V., Bezverhiy D., Ushakov V. L., Kartashov S. I., Anokhin K. V., Posichanyuk V. I., Terentev V. N.

In this work, the investigation of network activity of mirror neurons systems in animal brains depending on experience (existence or absence performance of the shown actions) was carried out. It carried out the research of mirror neurons network in the C57/BL6 line mice in the supervision task of swimming mice-demonstrators in Morris water maze. It showed the presence of mirror neurons systems in the motor cortex M1, M2, cingular cortex, hippocampus in mice groups, having experience of the swimming and without it. The conclusion is drawn about the possibility of the new functional network systems formation by means of mirror neurons systems and the acquisition of new knowledge through supervision by the animals in nonspecific tasks.

Motor resonance and inhibitory mechanisms in action observation as revealed by corticospinal excitability
Carlos Nieto-Doval, Aynur Ragimova, Gleb Perevoznyuk et al., Scientific Reports 2025 Vol. 15 Article 23245
Motor resonance (MoR) refers to the automatic activation of motor circuits during action observation, reflecting an internal simulation of the observed movement. This phenomenon is thought to arise from the activity of mirror neuron regions, which modulate primary motor cortex (M1) excitability via cortico-cortical pathways. MoR, which is believed to be involved in the mechanism underlying action understanding ...

Временной профиль активации системы зеркальных нейронов при наблюдении за движением. Исследование при помощи транскраниальной магнитной стимуляции
Нието-Доваль К., Ragimova A., Viazmin A. et al., Нервно-мышечные болезни 2024 Т. 14 № 4 С. 40–50
Abstract Background. Mirror neurons (MN) are integral to linking the perception of actions with their execution, activating during both action observation and execution. While extensive research has elucidated their functional roles, the temporal dynamics of MN responses in humans remain insufficiently understood. Aim. To investigate the temporal profile of MN activity during hand movement observation using transcranial ...

The mirror neuron system is a fundamental brain system of the brain that provides the ability to understand the actions of others and plays a key role in motor learning and empathy. In this review, we have thoroughly examined the internal and external factors that influence the functioning of the mirror neuron system. Issues such ...

The Influence of Body Posture on the Mirror Neuron System
Aynur A. Ragimova, Carlos M. Nieto-Doval, Mikhail I. Salamatin et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2024 Vol. 21 No. 3 P. 439–455
Though the mirror neuron system (MNS) is studied in the scientific community, the influence of the body posture on the functioning of the MNS, as well as on the excitatory and inhibitory system of the brain, has not been revealed yet. In our study, we investigated the functioning of the MNS in case of head ...

In this study, the influence of the context of movement on the sensorimotor rhythms of the EEG was studied when observing the movements of various objects. The results obtained suggest that the introduction of a context about the movement of an extraneous object, namely, the connection of the observed movement with a human limb, leads to ...

Listening to action-related sentences impairs postural control
Kosonogov V., Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology 2011 Vol. 21 P. 742–745
According to the mirror neurons data there exist areas in the premotor cortex that are activated both during action perception and action execution. It was hypothesized that posture maintenance would be impaired by simultaneous action perception in concordance with cognitive dissonance theory. A test was conducted during which 23 neurologically normal humans were to maintain ...

Why the mirror neurons cannot support action understanding
Kosonogov V., Neurophysiology 2012 Vol. 44 P. 499–502
After the discovery of the “mirror” neurons in primates, some researchers tended to explain action understanding as a result of functioning of these units. The proponents of the traditional view on the nature of this cognitive and social phenomenon assume that the mirror neurons do not provide action understanding or provide it only partly. There ...

Interbrain cortical synchronization encodes multiple aspects of social interactions in monkey pairs
Lebedev M., Tseng P. H., Rajangam S. et al., Scientific Reports 2018 Vol. 8 No. 4699 P. 1–15
While it is well known that the primate brain evolved to cope with complex social contingencies, the neurophysiological manifestation of social interactions in primates is not well understood. Here, concurrent wireless neuronal ensemble recordings from pairs of monkeys were conducted to measure interbrain cortical synchronization (ICS) during a whole-body navigation task that involved continuous social interaction of two monkeys. One monkey, the passenger, was carried in a robotic wheelchair to a food dispenser, while a second monkey, ...

The article considers some paradoxical properties of network structures which are studied in the modern networks science; and some conclusions for social cognition, effective construction of social and communication environments, management and forecasting are drawn. In this connection, such a phenomenon of communication and organization of social life as intersubjectivity is discussed. The concept of ...
