HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Answering SPARQL Queries over Databases under OWL 2 QL Entailment Regime

Ch. 35. P. 552–567.
Kontchakov R., Rezk M., Rodríguez-Muro M., Xiao G., Zakharyaschev M.

We present an extension of the ontology-based data access platform Ontop that supports answering SPARQL queries under the OWL 2 QL direct semantics entailment regime for data instances stored in relational databases. On the theoretical side, we show how any input SPARQL query, OWL 2 QL ontology and R2RML mappings can be rewritten to an equivalent SQL query solely over the data. On the practical side, we present initial experimental results demonstrating that by applying the Ontop technologies—the tree-witness query rewriting, T-mapping optimisations using SQL expressivity and database integrity constraints—the system produces scalable SQL queries.

The Benefits of Query-Based KGQA Systems for Complex and Temporal Questions in LLM Era
Alekseev A., Chaichuk M., Butko M. et al., , in: 30th International Conference on Applications of Natural Language to Information Systems, NLDB 2025, Kanazawa, Japan, July 4–6, 2025, Proceedings, Part I. Natural Language Processing and Information Systems. (LNCS, volume 15836)* I. Vol. 15836.: Springer, 2025. P. 426–441.
Large language models excel in question-answering (QA) but struggle with multi-hop reasoning and temporal questions. Query-based knowledge graph QA (KGQA) offers a modular alternative by generating executable queries instead of direct answers. We explore multi-stage query-based framework for WikiData QA, proposing multi-stage approach that enhances performance on challenging multi-hop and temporal benchmarks. Through generalization and ...

Slezak D., Kashnitsky Y., Kuznetsov S., Открытые системы. СУБД 2014 № 10 С. 44–45
Today’s data science and business often live apart: IT companies are mired in «burning» projects and do not have enough resources to try out new methods of data analysis. Meanwhile, these new fresh-developed methods are often too crude to be put on stream. Here we present an analytic data processing technology that is based on ...

OntoQuad: Native High-Speed RDF DBMS for Semantic Web
Potocki A., Polukhin A., Drobyazko G. et al., , in: Knowledge Engineering and the Semantic Web. 4th Conference, KESW 2013, St. Petersburg, Russia, October 7-9, 2013. ProceedingsVol. 394.: Berlin: Springer, 2013. P. 171–131.
In the last years native RDF stores made enormous progress in closing the performance gap compared to RDBMS. This albeit smaller gap, however, still prevents adoption of RDF stores in scenarios with high requirements on responsiveness. We try to bridge the gap and present a native RDF store “OntoQuad” and its fundamental design principles. Basing ...
