The article analyses the basic stages, trends and effects of transformation of higher education in Belarus during the period from 1991 to 2011. The author suggests his version of periodization of the university transformation processes in legal (de jure), imaginary (de imago) and actual(de facto) dimensions, starting with the phase of “productive uncertainty” (1991–2004) and ending with mummification of a “disciplinary university” (2007–2011).
