Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

Algebra, Geometry, and AI: Russian and Vietnamese Mathematicians Discuss Current Research
A delegation of scientists from Hanoi visited the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and then took part in a Russian-Vietnamese conference in St Petersburg. The events were part of the three-year project ‘Flexibility and Computational Methods.’ Over the course of the project, the researchers have prepared joint publications and obtained new mathematical results.

When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

Decomposition of the Knapsack Problem for Increasing the Capacity of Operating Rooms
Lazarev A. A., Lemtyuzhnikova D. V., Somov M. L., Mathematics 2022 Vol. 10 No. 5 P. 1–18
This paper is aimed at the problem of scheduling surgeries in operating rooms. To solve this problem, we suggest using some variation of the bin packing problem. The model is based on the actual operation of 10 operating rooms, each of which belongs to a specific department of the hospital. Departments are unevenly loaded, so ...

New Metaheuristic for Priority Guillotine Bin Packing Problem with Incompatible Categories and Sequential Deformation
Voronov V., Peresunko P., Videnin Sergey et al., , in: Software Engineering Perspectives in Intelligent Systems Proceedings of 4th Computational Methods in Systems and Software 2020Vol. 2. Book 1295. Issue 1.: Springer, 2020. P. 825–836.
The paper considers the formulation of a new priority packing problem with incompatible categories and dynamically changing bin sizes, which is a variant of the well-known bin packing problem. This is a challenging optimization problem that is often encountered in the context of cutting ingots of non-ferrous and precious metals using a guillotine. We use ...

The Algorithm of Continuous Optimization Based on the Modified Cellular Automaton
Evsyutin O., Шелупанов А. А., Мещеряков Р. В. et al., Symmetry 2016 Vol. 8 No. 9 P. 1–18
This article is devoted to the application of the cellular automata mathematical apparatus to the problem of continuous optimization. The cellular automaton with an objective function is introduced as a new modification of the classic cellular automaton. The algorithm of continuous optimization, which is based on dynamics of the cellular automaton having the property of ...

Fuzzy portfolio optimization model with estimation of results
Nikulin E. E., Perepelitsa D. G., Zhdanova O. A. et al., Journal of Internet Banking and Commerce 2016 Vol. 21 No. S6: Special Issue: Territory and Industry: The Search for Innovative Ways of Developing
In this paper, we propose two fuzzy portfolio optimization models based on the Markowitz mean-variance approach. Uncertainty is an inherent property of the securities market, there turns of different types of securities can rarely be described statistically. Dealing with uncertainty, portfolio optimization theory began to move toward application of fuzzy mathematic. Besides presenting fuzzy models, ...
