The article is devoted to the view of one of the early Russian conservatives Sergey Nikolayevich Glinka on the problem of serfdom in Russia. The author has analyzed the materials of “Russian Messenger”, a magazine published by Glinka, and considered it’s conservative programme of liquidation serfdom’s negative socio-political and economical consequences, which went with preservation of the institute. The research of Glinka’s last unpublished writings permits to talk about his critical attitude toward the serfdom in Russia, which was connected with the evolution of his world outlook to a liberalism. In conclusion it is said that the negative attitude toward the serfdom was inherent to Glinka during all his life. But during a period of his conservative views he was believing in possibility to decide a peasant question through the moral enlightenment of Russian society. In the last years of his life he was standing for transfer the question into the political and lawful spheres.
