Strabo’s Geography is one of the principal sources from the beginning of the ‘common era’ that has long and actively been used with regard to the history and geography of the oikoumene.

During the last half-century, a non-critical (illustrative and consumerist) or hypercritical approach has gradually been replaced with the awareness of the fact that, prior to its use as a source, one should clarify the structure, genre, composition, style, sources (and the ways they were employed by the geographer), as well as the aims, purposes and the historical background of the Geography, Strabo’s world outlook, manuscript tradition and many other aspects.
