The interactive effects of plurilingualism and intercultural competence on motivation for creativity: a moderated moderation analysis
This study continued a project aiming at empirically investigating the plurilingual creativity paradigm. It looked at how plurilingual and pluricultural factors interactively influence the contribution of general motivation to the motivation for creativity. Online data collection included assessments of language repertoire (measured by the number of languages spoken by participants and their overall proficiency in these languages), multicultural experience (measured by the Multicul - tural Experience Questionnaire), intercultural competence (measured by the Integrative Intercultural Competence Survey), and motivation for creativity (measured by the Creativity Motivation Scale). Moderated moderation analyses were conducted to test whether the effects of plurilingualism and intercultural competence on creativity motivation depend on individual motivational characteristics. The results revealed a significant three-way interaction: the number of languages and lack of ethnocentrism jointly moderated the contribution of general motivation to creativity motivation. Specifically, plurilingualism enhanced creativity motivation among individuals exhibiting low general motivation but high openness to cultural diversity. These findings highlight the importance of intercultural attitudes in transforming linguistic diversity into creative engagement. They suggest that environments encouraging multilingual communication and cultural openness can stimulate creative motivation, especially among individuals who are not naturally highly driven. The study provides empirical evidence for the plurilingual creativity paradigm, demonstrating that creative engagement emerges from the dynamic interplay between motivational, linguistic, and intercultural factors. It also underscores the relevance of promoting plurilingual and intercultural experiences in education and professional development as pathways for fostering creativity
