InGrid: Towards a Simulation-Based Automated Decision-Making System for Transportation
Transportation systems are complicated and deal with significant problems. With the pool of possible solutions being wide, extensive transportation planning has to be involved. However, planning based on expert opinions is significantly limited in terms of rapidity, accuracy, and confidence. Computer-aided design and automated decision-making systems are the next step to ensure transportation system development alignment with solving persisting transportation problems. This paper analyses the functional requirements for a simulation-based automated decision-making system for transportation. Existing practices, needs, and limitations are assessed, and a comprehensive architecture for such a system is synthesized and described in detail. The proposed InGrid (Inductive Grid) automated decision-making system architecture includes a core simulation model, scenario configuration capabilities, verification and validation modules, automated decision and scenario configuration optimization, and continuous model validation. The obtained results can be used in the development of traffic control and transportation planning decision support systems.
