Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Laser-induced demagnetization in van der Waals 𝑋⁢𝑌- and Ising-like antiferromagnets NiPS3 and FePS3

PHYSICAL REVIEW MATERIALS. 2024. Vol. 8. No. 1. Article 014408.
Kuntu D. V., Arkhipova E. A., Shelukhin L. A., Mertens F., M. A. Prosnikov, Eliseyev I. A., Smirnov A. N., Davydov V. Y., Mañas-Valero S., Coronado E., Cinchetti M., Kalashnikova A. M.

The critical behavior of laser-induced changes in magnetic ordering is studied experimentally in two-dimensional zigzag antiferromagnets XY-like NiPS3 and Ising-like FePS3. To examine laser-induced dynamics in flakes of these compounds, we employ time-resolved exchange linear dichroism effect sensitive to zigzag magnetic ordering and independent of the orientation of the antiferromagnetic vector. In both compounds laser excitation in the vicinity of the absorption edge induces partial quenching of the antiferromagnetic ordering manifested by exchange linear dichroism reduction. The amplitude of the effect varies with temperature as the derivative of the antiferromagnetic vector and exhibits a critical behavior with the exponents corresponding to XY and Ising models for NiPS3 and FePS3, respectively. Critical slowing down of the demagnetization in the vicinity of Néel temperature is found, however, only in FePS3. In contrast, the increase of the demagnetization time near the ordering temperature in NiPS3 is minor. We show that the difference in the demagnetization times correlates well with the spin specific heat in both compounds. Beyond the range of slowing down, the demagnetization times in NiPS3 and FePS3 are comparable, about 5–10 ps, and are longer than those reported earlier for CoPS3 and considerably shorter than for MnPS3. This points to the importance of the unquenched angular momentum of transition-metal ions in laser-induced demagnetization process.

Wu Z., Yu Y., Chibisov A., Materials Today Energy 2023 Vol. 37 Article 101414
The limited availability of lithium metal resources has led to the development of sodium/potassium-ion batteries due to the abundance and low cost of sodium/potassium. However, finding suitable cathode materials with high capacity, stable cycling performance, and efficient electrochemical interface is still challenging. Enhancement of superconductivity by polarization of magnetic impurities in disordered films
Seleznev G., Fominov Yakov V., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2026 Vol. 114 No. 7 Article 074505
Dirty superconducting films with magnetic impurities can exhibit nontrivial behavior in a magnetic field that polarizes the impurity spins. As predicted by Kharitonov and Feigelman (KF) [JETP Lett. 82, 421 (2005)], this polarization reduces the exchange scattering rate. Consequently, a parallel magnetic field can enhance the critical temperature Tc when magnetic-field pair breaking is weak, as realized for ...

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have emerged as promising materials for next-generation light-emitting diodes (LEDs) owing to their solution processability, tunable emission wavelengths, narrow emission linewidths, and high photoluminescence quantum yields. Among them, anisotropic nanocrystals, including one-dimensional nanorods (NRs) and two-dimensional nanoplatelets (NPLs), offer additional opportunities for controlling transition dipole moment orientation and light out-coupling efficiency. These ...

Slow electron-phonon relaxation controls the dynamics of the superconducting resistive transition
Baeva E., Kolbatova A. I., Titova N. A. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2024 Vol. 110 No. 10 Article 104519
We investigate the temporal and spatial scales of resistance fluctuations (𝑅 fluctuations) at the superconducting resistive transition accessed through voltage fluctuation measurements in thin epitaxial TiN films. This material is characterized by slow electron-phonon relaxation, which puts it far beyond the applicability range of the textbook scenario of superconducting fluctuations. The measured Lorentzian spectrum of the 𝑅 fluctuations ...
