Recent studies indicate that India was in fact the original destination of Afanasy Nikitin's voyage. This raises a legitimate question of how the native of Tver prepared for his journey and what sources he used. The article shows that Afanasy Nikitin's notes reflect the knowledge of at least three translated works of the pre-Mongolian period, which began to be rewritten in Russia in the second half of the 15th century. These are: “The Christian Topography of Cosmas Indicopleustes”, “The Tale of the Rakhmans and Their Marvelous Life” and “The Tale of the Indian Kingdom”. Athanasius uses these texts as sources of relevant information, tries to find correspondences to them in the Indian reality around him, and uses them as narrative models.
