'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Dzhalilova D., Zolotova N., Fokichev N. et al., PeerJ 2023 Vol. 11 Article e16159
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer. It is a heterogeneous disease, including both hereditary and sporadic types of tumors. CRC results from complex interactions between various genetic and environmental factors. Inflammatory bowel disease is an important risk factor for developing CRC. Despite growing understanding of the CRC biology, preclinical models are still ...

Dual role of p73 in cancer microenvironment and DNA damage response
Rozenberg J., Zvereva S., Dalina A. et al., Cells 2021 Vol. 10 No. 12 Article 3516
Understanding the mechanisms that regulate cancer progression is pivotal for the development of new therapies. Although p53 is mutated in half of human cancers, its family member p73 is not. At the same time, isoforms of p73 are often overexpressed in cancers and p73 can overtake many p53 functions to kill abnormal cells. According to ...

The global burden of adolescent and young adult cancer in 2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
GBD 2019 Adolescent Young Adult Cancer C., Otstavnov S., Vlassov V., The Lancet Oncology 2022 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 27–52
Background: In estimating the global burden of cancer, adolescents and young adults with cancer are often overlooked, despite being a distinct subgroup with unique epidemiology, clinical care needs, and societal impact. Comprehensive estimates of the global cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (aged 15-39 years) are lacking. To address this gap, we analysed ...

Molecular Mechanisms of Oncogenesis through the Lens of Nucleosomes and Histones
Espiritu D., Gribkova A., Gupta S. et al., Journal of Physical Chemistry B 2021 Vol. 125 No. 16 P. 3963–3976
At the cellular level, cancer is the disease of both the genome and the epigenome, and the interplay between genetic mutations and epigenetic states may occur at the level of elementary chromatin units, the nucleosomes. They are formed by a segment of DNA wrapped around an octamer of histone proteins. In this review, we survey various mechanisms of cancer etiology and ...
